But how can the graphics be so much better? Normally if I emulate something, let's say an Amiga game in 640x480 it doesn't upscale the res, it just shows the same amount of pixels spread out on a bigger area (like, say 1920x1200 with black borders on the sides)


Thats only true for 2D games that use sprites. 3D games render the polygons in whatever resolution you want them to.

I really don't know how these guys are doing it with emulation and upscaling the textures...but a lot of what I saw in metroid prime 3 was very nice at 1080p. Like the game was made in 1080p/widescreen in mind.
