Speaking at this morning’s press conference for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in Japan, Hideo Kojima has said the consoles will be phased out “in the near future”.

The MGS creator and head of Kojima Productions said that players should have their experiences “on the go”.

“In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” said Kojima. “Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”

But SCEJ boss Hiroshi Kawano said that while he respects what Kojima said, he did add it was “a bold prediction”.

We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge,” he said.

Earlier this morning, the developer announced a new collaboration with Capcom to include a bonus mode in MGS: Peace Walker that sees Monster Hunter included in the game.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker releases on April 29 in Japan, June 11 in the US and June 18 in the UK for PSP.

The only current console project in developer at Kojima Productions is Metal Gear Solid: Rising for PS3 and 360, which may or may not get a re-reveal this month.
