The Jrpg and wrpg divide isn't 100% clear. There is some blurring between the lines. Early jrpgs are very similar to early wrpgs. Heck Dragon Quest to this day is very similar to early wrpgs aside from the anime artwork. Demon's Souls is basically a Japanese roguelike, which have a lot of similarity to the western roguelikes of the past. Yes Dragon Quest and Demon's Souls are Japanese developed but they aren't drastically different from their older western brothers (Wizardry and western roguelikes) like most jrpgs are in the post-FF4 era. Heck even western developers are blurring the lines. There are rpgs made by western developers that were inspired by jrpgs (look at the RPG Maker community for eg. Or the Pier Solar Sega Mega Drive/Genesis homebrew game that's coming out. The dev team is made up of a Brazilian team leader and a bunch of Europeans but yet it is without a doubt a jrpg in spirit rather than a wrpg. There's also a rpg on the DS. Black Sigil or whatever it's called that was created by a western dev but inspired by snes jrpgs. I wish that western devs wishing to make a jrpg-like would make the effort to create a wrpg/jrpg hybrid to really establish their own identity instead of just ripping off the same cookie cutter 16-bit jrpg template though.
