*cough*D&D Nerd*cough* Though I think it scarier that I know that the alignment references you use i've been familiar with for about 20 years :\
Anyways yes a majority of Nintendo iconic characters are either Neutral or Chaotic Good. Lawful by original D&D does indeed mean someone who follows the rules, though the origin of the rules can be flexible; spiritual, personal, religious and so on. Though over time the reference to lawful has been less strict.
PS. D&D alignment valuation suck. They are relatively archaic, strict and don't define enough of the myriad of possibilities. I know they have been shoe horning extra meaning, but it still aweful.
Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
