A great deal of the major PS3 titles people are looking forward to are multi-platform titles with 360 or enhanced ports. Plus Sony won't even have their motion sensor controller ready for a while still (and even then, it's after Natal and AFTER Wiimote + Motion Plus). PS3 is pretty much a system running in the same place as GameCube last gen, but on the budget and fans of PS2.

The PS3 outsold the GameCube in 2 and a half years, and shows no signs of slowing down.

At the expense of multiple price cuts and massive marketing campaigns, etc.  Both of which are causing their company to hemridge funds. Sony's image and profits are both in the red.  They're going to have quite the uphill battle to bring themselves back.  One that might hurt their future.

The Ps3 is similar to the Gamecube if you don't consider a huge amount of factors and just point to it being in third place.

Otherwise, no.

That was pretty much all I meant by saying its running in the same 'place' as Gamecube.  Don't know why people have to get into this big personal debate over things and think people are saying personal about a console.  Wasn't saying 'PS3 has sold only as well a GameCube' or 'PS3 is a failure in comparison to the Wii' or something.  But still, I do feel the PS3 isn't doing well and its only been recently that its seen an upswing.

Comparing this gen's third place to last gen's third place is like comparing this gen's first place to the third gen's first place. Tell me, did the GameCube and Xbox, even combined, come anywhere near the PS2? No. The PS2 sold 140 million of a gen with 185 million consoles. However, the GameCube did make a profit (or rather, Nintendo made a profit from 2001-2006, most likely due to the GBA) so in that sense the GC was superior. But no, in terms of "place", the PS3 is doing better, because it's a closer competition.
