Wii total excluding Japan: 43,634,747

HD total excluding Japan: 50,052,595

360 total excluding Japan: 30,289,232

PS3 total excluding Japan: 19,763,363

Now, why exclude Japan? Japanese consumers buy Japanese games and Western consumers buy Japanese games and Western games, so coming from the perspective of a Japanese publisher, the Japanese console sales are important, however from the perspective of a publisher in the west the Japanese sales are unimportant. Its like how Toyota may consider all parts of the world for developing their cars which are to be exported worldwide whereas GM would not consider Japan when creating their cars because they do not sell well there.

So considering the outlook for a western publisher, the Xbox 360 and the Wii are actually similarly placed in terms of overall hardware moved because a western publisher cannot reliably sell software in Japan. Overall considering the parity of the two HD systems in terms of controls and performance the western publisher who goes 'HD' for a game is infact targeting a wider consumer base for a strictly console release. If they are targetting HD including PC then this is especially so.

In a western focused industry as we have now, just the non Japanese numbers are needed to help understand a lot of the behaviour in the industry, especially from the western publishers towards the Wii. From these numbers we can see that its nowhere near close to the domination that the PS2 had in times past and whilst its performing better individualy, the progress its made thus far is quite similar at the moment to the next best HD console and below parity with the two HD consoles combined.

So what am I trying to say? Well its best to focus on worldwide numbers when describing the behaviour of the Japanes publishers and developers and its best to focus on the non Japanese numbers when describing the actions of western publishers. Furthermore I wanted to show what these numbers are, its up to you to decide on the implications of them.

At bolded part:  It might be similar except for the fact that Wii is 13 million ahead of 360 in Western territories while PS3 is 10.5 million behind.
