The secret to success is to form that bond between the gamers, game makers and games. This is why sequels dominate the industry; it's so hard to create something new that clicks with the audience, that once you find something that works, you milk it for all its work. Great once you found that IP, lousy if you're on the outside looking in. The Wii also has the complimentary problem, since they are new gamers with no established connection, there is little difference between new and established IPs; this is why even games from established IPs are having problems (that and most of them suck), except for Nintendo.

Naturally, Nintendo has been backing its own consoles with its own games since the NES, and has built a solid foundation over the decades. Most third parties ditched Nintendo during the PlayStation era, and are only looking back now, after throwing their support behind the PS3 and 360, while ignoring the Wii. Their fan base bought the HD systems and ignored the Wii, leaving no potential audience to tap into; except for the die hard Nintendo fans, who naturally favour Nintendo games. Third parties with established IPs and fans could be successful on the Wii right now, but as long as they put their games on the HD console, their fans will never give the Wii a second look. If they want success on the Wii, drop the HD consoles (I'm sure their fans would just love that).

There is no easy option for companies to succeed, just keep trying, and stay alive until you find an IP that sells. If they can't survive? Life's tough.
