Though it was a long time ago, similar problems did occur with first-generation DVD players when more advanced dual-layer discs and the like started being released (The Matrix in particular was problematic). This is different of course, stemming from DRM issues rather than simple hardware issues. Personally, I HAVE actually installed firmware updates in my DVD player, but would never expect the majority of the public to do so. That said, I do appreciate that the HD-DVD spec requires the inclusion of an ethernet port in order to help combat these very scenarios. I think it is valuable to have the potential to increase the performance of a device through updates, which is very common in devices like CD/DVD burners.
