Yes, they are increasing thier shelf space... but only for full price buying, not renting.

Back when I rented a couple of N64 games (10 years ago!) games had 1 set of shelves (approx 1m X 2m) which would be half PS1, 1/4 GameBoy and 1/4 N64 (2-3 shelves) plus an ex-rental bin which was 98% PS1 (being discs they don't last as well with multiple careless renters)

About 5 years ago the GC had a whole set of shelves (1m X 2m) to itself, 1/4 being for buying new games.... XBox had the opposite side to that... and PS2 had 3X the space (GBA had a little space, but not much)

Now all 5 sets of shelves, plus a wall-space area (probably equal to 4 sets of shelves) are almost entirely for buying games, though a small bit for PS2 rental and PSP UMD films.
