I am right there with you. I am not too crazy about the writer myself either but I heard Sony games is on board with the movie production so I just hope Ueda has A LOT of say in what goes on.

I don't want this to become like every other thing Hollywood screws up.

Even the producer, Kevin Misher makes me upset. No word on a Director yet though.

Edit - This may just be my LotR love showing here, but how do you think Peter Jackson would do? I know that would at least get people to watch it.

Outside of the Lord of the Ring's Trilogy, I'm not particularly a fan of Peter Jackson.
I don't think he'd do worst than many, but eh, the Del Toro suggestion was far more to my liking .

To be fair, choosing a director for this adaptation is extremely difficult. It's a very unique game, with practically no dialogue to speak of and a visual style that would be hard to duplicate in cinema. So unless they drastically change that formula (The worst case scenario, in my opinion), then choosing someone to direct will be guesswork, mostly.
Selecting someone like Del Toro is a good start simply because he seems to understand the game, which I believe is the most essential quality.

I do share your hope that Ueda will be heavily involved, I can't see it working without him.
