While you can format an SD card to anything you would want like EXT3 or NTFS almost every device you will come accross expects it to have FAT32 as the filesystem present for it to read it correctly. While you can pay Microsoft for the ability get use the FAT32 filesystem there are many free alternatives out there and so I doubt Nintendo would have a problem allowing any USB storage device on the Wii.
