The DS was a risk, because Nintendo couldn't know how well it would be received. It was different to previous handhelds and in case it failed to become successful, the Gameboy brand would not have been harmed. So in the beginning the DS and GBA were both supported. But since the DS became a big success, the Gameboy was quickly dropped. There's really no need for Nintendo to have two different handhelds at the same time. Either the DS succeeded and replaced the Gameboy or a new Gameboy would have been launched in case the DS failed. |
rumer has it ( and i dont see why it isnt true) that nintendo had a new system branded with the gmaeboy logo incase the ds had flopped//
