you're sort of on the right track there. There are not as many republicans, but they are much more organized and ideologically similar, so they function more like a bloc. There are more democrats, but they represent more of a coalition of different groups, i.e. minorities, women, the LBGT community, the Jewish community, etc. etc. Because they are so diverse, they don't always agree on everything and naturally is not as united or as organized as the republican party.

The republicans are actually just as split. You just can't tell because they're all white guys that look the same... and they're more willing to just get behind someone they disagree with for a few years and play the "Devil you know" card.
Mostly because they already have everything pretty ok.
The minorites, LBGT and Jewish people still all vote the line democratic though... or just don't vote.
Also as for being organized. The Democrats are just as organized as the Republicans. The Republicans just feel more motivated to vote. They get higher turnout naturally not through any sort of political machine.
