FYI The West Bank is occupied by Israel for the exact those reasons - security for it's citizens.

Gaza was a test ground. Ariel Sharon thought it was good to give the Palestinians a chance to show they can be peaceful. But you know what, they failed. And the opposition party in Israel, with leader Benyamin Netanyahu, is about to win the election that is in a couple of weeks - and Netanyahu has always been against Israel leaving Gaza.

You are right that Gaza was supposed to be a testing ground (that obviously proved to be a failed strategy) but Bibi Netanyahu was against leaving Gaza only in the beginning.  Bibi changed his mind later and agreed to do it (he actually voted "yes" on the withdrawl measure presented to the cabinet).  Bibi isn't a saint in this thing.

But your first comment does bring up a valid point.

Why is it that everyone keeps telling the Jews to take the step towards peace, and when they do (and the Arabs attack anyway) that the Jews always get blamed?  I mean seriously, when does the world finally take a step back and say, "wow, the Jews keep giving, and the Arabs keep the same 'drive the Jews into the sea' mantra up anyway?"

Yeah, I'm amazed too that no one is giving credit to Israel for that. It's so unnfair. No wonder that many Israelis feel discouraged and eventually are thinking "fuck it, no one is thanking us for being nice".

About Netanyahu, I'm sure he is still against Israel leaving Gaza, in his heart. But there are tactical reasons to vote yes. Political and other reasons.

Yeah, Bibi ain't all bad... I've always had a softspot for the guy.  I just wish he'd stop being a politician, and be a leader.  He had the helm back in '96, and he had his big "Three NOs" and he didn't stick to his guns, and he gave up Chevron (Hebron) to the Arabs and didn't get a thing or guarantee in return.  So, I honestly don't put too much faith in the guy... Don't get me wrong, I like him better than Olmert or Barak, but he's not that much different than him.  I hope Likud wins like it's supposed to and he proves me wrong.  I'd love to see him be more like his brother, and be a hero.
