Make sure you account for inflation. $299 back in then does not equal $299 in 2009 dollars.
EDIT:
I went ahead and did all the math for you. The PS1 launched in the US @ $299 (I had a launch PS1). That $299 is roughly equivalent to $420 USD in 2008.
