Depends on the game, I honestly think fallout 3 wouldn't have held my attention for so long if it wasn't for the free roaming. I can understand not every game can do this. I myself noticed I prefer linear settings.
Reviewers have no idea what they want anymore. Just give them aliens and guns and they will be happy (most of the time).
