I understand that the beginning of the game can be confusing if you aren't greedy as me and kill everyone without thinking twice, but after the village scene it should be clear that you are supposed to kill pretty much everything you can, because it's a good way to get money which you need to upgrade your weapons. Also, the ammo is plenty in this game, just don't start to think that you have to use the knife to save ammo. The game adapts to your playing style, so if you solve all your problems with guns instead of the knife, you get more ammo from the enemies.

The knife is not a bad things though.  I love it, things like the Krauser fight where you pretty much have to go with the knife are some of my favorite parts.  I love swinging the wii-mote as your knife fighting.

The knife definitely comes in handy when you fight Krauser. But I have heard from some people that they were always low on ammo even though they used the knife a lot. Well, that was their problem. Not using a lot of ammo greatly reduces how much ammo you receive from enemies.

Of course when I say use ammo, I mean to actually hit the enemies. Firing bullets in the air won't do you any good.

Interesting, I did not realize that.  There were a few times early on I was a bit tight on ammo.  I may have been a victim of that as early in the game was also when I was being more conservatitve with ammo.
