Nintendo was on top of the console wars with NES and then SNES, but moving on with N64 knocked them down to a distant second. But if you look at it, the PS3 isn't doing as bad as N64 and Sony isn't forgotten as quickly as Nintendo was back then.

 

These consoles would disagree with you

While the PC-FX bombed, the Saturn was actually the number one console in Japan for the first part of the generation and it kept trading the lead in Japan with the PS1 until FFVII put the Sony over the top. The N64 had more competitors to deal with than the PS3.
