Yeah, I'm aware that 45nm Cell has been in development for quite a while, but I dont think it will be ready for PS3 this year. I think CY08 Q1 is the most likely quarter for it to be introduced.
I really wouldn't pay much attention to most articles about hardware revisions, the vast majority are totally clueless. Having said that, late 2008/early 2009 was a reasonable estimate in February. Now it's looking like early 2009 is more likely.
Here's an example of ridiculously ignorant reporting:
Sony has once again sent the PlayStation 3 off for testing by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), indicating it has a new stock keeping unit (SKU) up its sleeve.
Sony already has a new 80GB PS3 SKU on the way, but the addition of extra storage would not require renewed testing by the FCC, which deals with testing communications technology.
So, it would seem that the version of the PS3 sent off to the FCC must do something new.
It could be that Sony has worked wireless HDTV functionality into the PS3's guts. As SPOnG told you last week, Sony, Hitachi, Motorola, Samsung Electronics and Sharp have got together to make the wireless streaming of HD signal between consumer electronics products (including, of course, the PS3) the new HD standard. This testing could be related to such functionality. Without modification to the PS3 itself, Sony would probably have to stream signal via a plug-in USB device.
Another possibility is the inclusion of built-in digital TV reception for the PS3. Sony already has PlayTV, a TV tuner peripheral, in the works. It could, however, be looking to better compete with Microsoft's expanding multimedia offering by building such functionality right into the PS3's innards.
With the FCC being a U.S. body, of course, there's no guarantee that any modifications to the PS3 will be seen in Europe.
Firstly, AFAIK any change in the electrical properties requires a new evaluation from the FCC, it doesn't necessarily mean the PS3 does anything new, it just means there has been an internal revision of the mobo which the FCC needs to check does not cause any unwanted interference.
Secondly, WHDI standard hasn't even been agreed on yet. So they jump from recent reports about consumer electronic manufacturers meeting to try to agree standards for WHDI to it suddenly being put in PS3 before those standards being agreed upon. What makes it even more ridiculous is that the reson for submitting electronics to the FCC is to ensure that it does not interfere with other devices. The tests they did are in the report; Bluetooth & WIFI. If a new device had WHDI you can be sure that this would be top of the FCC's priorities whilst testing it. This is not just wild speculation, the actual FCC report confirms that there is no WHDI in this model.
Thirdly, this model was submitted with the FCC which is a US body. Play-TV is based on the DVB-T standard which does not exist in North America. This is the reason Play-TV is not being released there. To release a PS3 in NA with a built in DVB-T tuner would be completely pointless.
This is typical of totally ignorant gaming journalism.
Here's another example of totally crap journalism which was picked up by lots of sites and spread as the truth:
Some filings over on the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) website have revealed that Sony plan to manufacture the white, 40GB PS3 for the American market. The first filings were made in October of last year, but were initially withheld from the public at Sony's request, so as to "avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of this product to the public". The filings are, however, now clearly visible on the FCC's site, including pics of the Commission's testing rig and Sony's declaration that the white PS3 will be manufactured according to FCC regulations. Now all we need is a release date, and we're all set.

Are these "journalists" so stupid as to think that a colour change of the plastic requires a new submission to the FCC? Total morons. What this actually was was the second revision of the 40Gb, CECHH (first one was CECHG), which had already been released in Japan, but was about to be released in US. If it was a white PS3 it would have simply had "CW" (ceramic white) added to the model number and certainly would not have required a new test by the FCC.
Sorry for my rant, but it really irritates me when I see such ignorantly incorrect speculation passed off as "news" by online gaming sites.
