They're disjointed with a shitload of range. That's enough to stop Mario in the air. They don't need to come out fast if you know how to space.

Ike's bair is lightning fast though its hit zone leaves a bit to be desired.

When I face the sandbag during matches where I play as Ike, I practice short hop to bair a lot.  ^_^
