Forums - Gaming Discussion - Mario losing it?

Kwaad said: If Mario Galaxy dont surpass Sunshine... I will say mario is dead. (sunshine shouldnt be too hard to pass because most people I know that bought it (didnt rent becuase they expected it to be so good) Hated it) So I dont know how the new mario will play out, but i'm 100% sure watching the play video's that it looks better than sunshine.
That's because Kwaad thinks everything will be "dead" if it doesn't sell AMAZINGLY. I think Mario Galaxy will sell excellently, and even if it didn't...Mario dead? please...there will be more, and better ones I'm sure. A new Mario Tennis would rock.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I think your premise for this thread is COMPLETELY wrong. The LAST Mario game released - NEW SUPER MARIO BROS - was in my opinion the best of the lot. It has sold through the roof in Japan (4.5mill+), as well as overseas - with total sales approaching 10million. And all this in less than a year. Mario started on handhelds, and in my opinion will always be more at home (i.e. the "definitive" Mario game) on handhelds. Console versions are just a distraction. That said - I did find Sunshine disapointing, but for un-obvious reasons. The game was quite a lot of fun, and had some really creative ideas in it. It did lack polish, balancing - and I thought the setting was terrible (sort of lost all the "real" Mario flavour - mushrooms, etc). I have very high hopes for Galaxy, and so far it looks to me like it will deliver. I think the sales will blow Sunshine out of the water. Mario did hit rock bottom - but has been reborn on the DS, and he is heading for dizzying heights again :)

Forgetting the NES much? Though I know what you mean...2D Mario games are the original, and are a great experience, but console versions have as much of a home in my heart as the handhelds do.

Super Mario galaxy seems a bit disorienting to me... but if it has pointer co-op, then I'm definitely getting it. I don't expect the sales to be very high, though, unless it still has a classic feeling to it along with a huge jumble of sidequests and other things to do.

Hmmm... good point (it did predate the GB didn't it..). Or did it actually start on Arcade? (Mario Bros?) I have no idea to be honest.

I think that mario made his first appearance on the NES's Donkey Kong.

Mario started on Donkey Kong the arcade game, known as Jumpman the carpenter. He was then renamed Mario, after Nintendo of America's Landlord Mario Segale. Mario Bros, in which Mario's profession was changed to a plumber, was as an arcade title, and was ported to the Atari 2600, 5200 and the Nes in 83, with versions on the C64, Apple II and the PC-88(whatever that is) in 84 and the Atari 7600 and XEGS in 88. So really he's arcade first, Atari and Nes second. Thankyou Wikipedia!

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I do hope that you needed Wikipedia for the dates I thought that Marios history was someting you learned in school, and by the way Sunshine is a great game. The only bad thing is that their is to few "special" world (those pure plattforms without flubber), a game with only those would kick some real ass.

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

Yup, that all sounds right. But SUPER Mario Bros... I remember playing that at the arcades (many, MANY moons ago...). Was that a NES title before arcade? Or did the arcade come first? (guessing NES?).

I know that, but the point of this was about the console Mario's.
