Forums - Gaming Discussion - Wii on Boats!!!!

This is why the Wii sales so great! Norwegian Cruise Line today announced it will offer guests a new service aboard their luxury liners: Nintendo Wii games. The system is already on all NCL America ships and will be rolled out to the rest of the fleet by next month. Each set-up comes equipped with Wii Sports, Wii Play, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, and Excite Truck (which, embarrassingly, forgot to pack its mini-games). Guests can play the Wii on large screens in each ship's atrium and kids will have special kiosks so they don't have to fight their grandparents for a turn.

Nintendo has always been looking into this type of system ... If I remember correctly, back in early 2002 Nintendo worked out a deal with a major american airline (I can't remember which one) to offer gamecube games on their planes; I could be wrong but I believe that it was set up so that the games would be read off of a high speed network drive and loaded into memory rather than using a game disc. I'm actually somewhat disapointed we haven't seen Sony or Microsoft attemt this because, in my opinion, everyone benefits; if you're on a long flight you can play games without worrying about batteries, Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony get to expose more people to their platform and games, and the airline gets a bullet point as to why their flights are better than a competitor.

Yeah, but Nintendo couldn't do that with the Wii everybody would be swinging controllers around unless they put racing games only on there.

Nintendo have been doing this since the SNES. even on the snes you had a games menu where you had a limited selection (about 10 games) that you could pick from and it would load of a network drive. This was on singapore airlines if i remember correctly

They may have been doing this back then but this will help them way more now than it did then. Think of how many people will play this for the first time on a boat, they will be so caught up in how fun it is there that they will run and buy one when they get home.

i don't know if you guys already know, since it is a little bit old, but nintendo also made a deal to have Wiis at six flags amusement parks http://wiispot.com/nintendo-six-flags-success/401/ http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12496 i think this i great marketing, imagine the parents take their children to the amusement park, children love the wii, parents notice how different it is from other consoles, and well, you know children, they won't rest until their parents buys them a wii, and parents won't answer "you don't need another videogame, you already have a playstation" =)

The Wii is going to be everywhere!
