Forums - Sales Discussion - 3rd Party Sales in Japan (360, Wii, PS3) - Top 10

I was actually just about to start a thread on this. Now we don't know about FF on Wii, but look at Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest VIII was the PS2's top selling game in Japan, selling almost 900,000 more than the second place Final Fantasy X. But the Dragon Quest series won't be calling the PS3 it's home like it did the PS and PS2. The next full installement of the game will be a DS title (expect the sales of this game to cause earthquakes). There's also the Wii bound DQ spin off that's getting a lot of buzz; Dragon Quest Swords: attack of the really long name. So one of the flagship Playstation series is now part of the Nintendo platform family.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

"""Boogie is the first time EA has granted Nintendo an exclusive in many years,""" Actually, its the third. They've already published SSX Blur, and given a lot of details about My Sims. They also are publishing "next-gen exclusive" MoH:Vanguard soon.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

I didn't include the 360 because in Japan it really is irrelevant.

I imagine Lucas will have some big exclusives as well. Think lightsaber Wiimote, that will be a blockbuster guaranteed.

Not in Japan...

Wow... so many things to say, so little space in the box. First of all, raw sales alone will not determine which platform a developer supports. The real number that will determine if a company continues to make games for a system is the profit made. And it's a fact that it cost significantly more for a company to make a PS3 game than a Wii one. Most estimates give the Wii an advantage of half to a third of the costs of a PS3 game. And by looking at a few of the games out there, I bet even less than that. (I'm looking at you, Cooking Mama!) Using a conservative ratio of half and assuming that the net profit on a Wii versus PS3 title is the same on a unit basis (after licensing, manufacturing, advertising, etc.), Wii titles only need to sell half as many copies to be profitable. And I bet many of the Wii 3rd Party games have made a tidy sum, while few PS3 ones have in just Japan. And why are we focusing on just Japanese sales anyway? Video games are global. Publishers care about how well their games are going to sell worldwide. While Rayman only sold 14,250 copies ltd in Japan, I bet Ubisoft is thrilled with the global sales that probably top 400,000. Another reason for the lack of third party sales is the quality of the titles and who the system appeals to. The Wii doesn't have a top notch racer like Ridge Racer 7 or a fighter with the pedigree of VF5. I bet if there were some better games, they'd sell more copies. And many people have been drawn to the Wii by Wii Sports. They're picking up Wii Play for the extra controller and cheap game included. Once they get their fill of those, I'm sure they'll be back for something else. In the end, there appears to be a shift of software development to the Wii. Will it last? Only time will tell. Hopefully those moving over will bring some good games. Otherwise, they can stay on the PS3 or 360. Before I go, I'd like to give props to OriGin for a great post. Thanks for giving us all the numbers and not cherry picking the ones to support one side or the other.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.

Another comment on all this: Its important (although we don't have these figures) to look at the *budgets* for each of these Wii/PS3 3rd party-titles. Many of the PS3 titles are large budget, original/sequel titles - and they are not ports. They require a large amount of investment and money. The Wii titles are the opposite. Its *very* easy to create Wii titles - many are enhanced GC titles, with new input controls added. Many are also ports - PS2 titles, which are ported over to the Wii (some via the GC). I don't think there is any question either, that in general the QUALITY of the 3rd party Wii titles are much lower than the PS3 titles. This also affects the sales. I suspect that if you looked at the "revenue vrs development cost" of the Wii vrs PS3 titles, that the Wii would (easily) come out on top. Not for all titles though - some have just completely flunked. (If you look at the total worldwide sales for all the titles, things would balance out more).

LOL cheers dude, and yes I agree. You explained the point about the cost of development much better than I tried - ie; selling less games doesn't necessarily mean a worse situation for a developer. I'm most certainly not a fanboy of any of the consoles, I simply base my opinion towards these kind of arguments on facts, and I absolutely HATE it when people form their opinion on a slice of the pie. Give me all the numbers and I will put forward my point, trying to be as educational as possible. Shutting fanboys down, whether they are Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft is fun, however shutting down a Nintendo fanboy is very difficult at the moment, because fanboy or not everyone should acknowledge that Nintendo is doing great things sales wise at the moment. I could keep ranting on and on but i'm not going too. Sales wise though, Nintendo is firing for a totally different market section, of which it is almost un-fair to compare them to the numbers that Sony and Microsoft are getting, because Sony is doing OKAY they are just far overshadowed by the Wii and the success it is having at the moment.
