The official Sony response:

According to NPD data, September 2007 was a strong month for the PlayStation brand, which showed a 13% increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in the US with total sales of $337 million for the month. PS3 continues to maintain an overall increase in sales, with 119K units sold at retail for the month. Also, with the new $399 40GB PLAYSTATION 3 SKU hitting store shelves on November 2nd, a new $499 price point for the 80GB model effective immediately, and highly anticipated titles available this holiday, such as Racthet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the PS3 is poised for very strong performance through the holiday season and into 2008.

The PSP had a great month, selling 285K units for the month. Success at retail is due to the release of the new slimmer and lighter PSP in North America which includes video-out capabilities for $169, the success of the Star Wars and Daxter Entertainment Packs, and the release of great titles such as Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow.

PS2 sales remained very strong for the month of September, selling 215K units, making it one of the best-selling consoles on the market.

Wait, did you just make that up? It looks like pretty good satire... Or is it really official?

My favorite is:

PS3 continues to maintain an overall increase in sales, with 119K units sold at retail for the month.

Of course it's pretty much impossible to decrease in sales, unless more people return their consoles than buy it.

Unless Kotaku made it up, it's the real deal.

What is their definition of "best-selling"?

I'm very interested in knowing how going from 130k to 119k can be considered an increase in sales, especially when the former was on a 4-weeks month, and the latter was for 5 weeks!

I'll assume this is real, and will analyse:

"increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in the US"

 - when all else fails, quote revenue. Was September a 5 week period last year?

"PS3 continues to maintain an overall increase in sales, with 119K units sold at retail for the month."

 - false. A 5 week month, indicates that sales dropped (per week), and it got slammed by the 360 by 5:1.

"The PSP had a great month, selling 285K units for the month. Success at retail is due to the release of the new slimmer and lighter PSP"

 - luckily sales continue to increase, because this was a poor performance if it represents a new hardware launch. Sales are closer to 80k-100k / month now. DS also outsold it by almost 2:1 - after a new PSP model + price cut.

"PS2 sales remained very strong for the month of September, selling 215K units, making it one of the best-selling consoles on the market."

 - making it the 2nd worst selling console on the market (ignoring the XBOX / GC) - only beating the PS3

"highly anticipated titles available this holiday, such as Racthet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the PS3 is poised"

 - well... Warhawk, LAIR, HS, Folklore are all out - and have had minimal impact on the charts. R&C & Uncharted represent the last hopes(?) for Sony this Xmas on the PS3. No Prologue?

Prologue has been delayed to 2008... It's in their blog:

(...)

This holiday lineup will be followed in 2008 by highly-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet and, of course, PlayStation Home.

PS: BTW, not just was September a 5 week month for NPD, but the sales number also decreased from 130k in August (which was 4 weeks!)...

Shams, every PS3 sold increases the overall sales. It's marketing spin that tricked you LOL.
