Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii reaches 6 million in 4 months

According to the front page data Wii has reached 6 million units sold in just over 4 months in the Americas, and 3 to 3.5 months elsewhere. Wii has been out for 17 weeks in the Americas, 2.37 million on the front page/17, at a rate of 139,412 consoles per week on average (obviously including the bias of the holidays, weekly sales are more like 80,000-90,000 now) In Japan, Wii is estimated to be at 1.98 million 15.5 weeks (adding 1.5 weeks from March 11 to make the data upto March 21). An average of 132,000 per week (again, obviously impacted heavily by the holidays, weekly sales are somewhere between 45,000-85,000 recently, depending on shipment allocations) In others, Wii is estimated at 1.68 million, through 14.5 weeks (if data is through March 21), an average of 115,862 units per week. With 800,000 Wii's sold in December, that would mean 880,000 were sold in 2007, in 11.5 weeks. This puts the recent rate at 76,522 consoles per week (on average). For comparison, in roughly 70 weeks Xbox 360 has sold 5.88 million in the Americas, a rate of 84,000 per week. This average fluctuates quite a bit (look at the 360 2006 December sales to see why!), but recently (and im most months) the range has been in the 60,000 to 70,000/week range.

Slowly but surely they're gonna recognize. Wii is no fad. Wii is no fluke. Wii is no gimmick. It is legit and it is here to stay. Heed these premonitions. •Wii will catch and surpass XBox 360's Worldwide sales by THIS SUMMER—specifically within the month of July •Wii will catch and surpass XBox 360's Americas sales ALSO by THIS SUMMER—again specifically within the month of July •Wii will have sold AT LEAST 20 Million units by December 31, 2007 11:59PM AKA the end of the year and the cherry on top •Wii will DOMINATE the ENTIRE 7th generation of game consoles going on to become The Greatest Selling Console of ALL TIME WORLD-WIDE even SURPASSING the mighty success of the Playstation 2 It is NOT too early to make these kinds of statements. In fact it is actually TOO LATE to make these kinds of statements. The writing has been on the wall specifically since September 16, 2005. The contest was won before it even started. If my statements seem incredulous, then let time verify what I have said. Time is a tattletale. John Lucas

Johnlucas: I like your sarcasm :D But yeah Wii is selling very well. This weeks Japanese sales would be intresting to see if it goes back to 70k+ or below 50k again. If its below 50k this week it means the hype is fading. If its 70k+ again world domination :D

it means the hypes fading or supply is constrained much like the DS lol I really don't think 20,000,000 by end of the year but I do feel in the area of 15,000,000-18,000,000 by 2008. The current rate is amazing, and I expected wii to do very well from the start(I had called this for the DS before release as well to much laughter.) I'm just not sure how much longer the huge demand will hold out. I figure by April-May maybe June it will begin to lower a bit. Probably with between 7million and 8million sold supply will begin to build everywhere. Even if it began to build now that's pretty amazing 360's supply began to sit at about where PS3's is. Again I'm sure Wii will be a break away hit this year at the very least, racking up between 15 and 18 million units sold with anywhere from a 3-7 game attach rate.

What makes you think that supply can so easily go from 44k to 70k+ in 1 week? You do realize we're talking about 1 week not a month or something. If we sales even go to 55k that's a good indicator of supply constraints. Sales don't just fluctuate that much when there are no significant games released unless there is supply constraints.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Early reports say ~ 60,000 this week for Wii

We'll know the Wii is in good supply when the price of a used Wii is less than a new one. Last time they checked, it was actually more expensive. :)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I agree that we need to be looking at trends on a monthly and yearly basis, not on a weekly basis. A slow week or two does not mean demand is waning. That said, 6 Million since November is phenomenal, and I still know plenty of people who are still seeking out a Wii. Demand certainly still seems high. And, I think people might need to temper their expectations of the Wii catching or passing the 360 this year. The Wii is selling great, but don't forget that people are still buying 360s, and will continue to with the new Zephyr model coming out, some big titles like Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Halo 3. The machine certainly isn't dead in the water, and has a lot of momentum. The Wii is doing phenomenally, so be happy about that. Just don't be disappointed if it doesn't rocket past the 360 this year.

it looks good for the wii but we have to wait how is the ps3 doing in europe... and Spazgadget your are right with "don't be disappointet if the wii don't pass the 360" anyway its not our war ... but lets pray for the wii success
