Forums - Sales Discussion - The OFFICIAL Feb 2007 NPD Thread

Feb 2007 Canada (NPD)

The Wii was the top-selling console in February in terms of unit sales, followed by the PlayStation 2 - with consumers taken advantages of lower prices for the PS2 machine.
The Nintendo DS was third, ahead of the Xbox 360, the PSP, Nintendo's GameBoy Advance and the PlayStation 3.
The 360 game Crackdown ranked second in February sales, behind only Nintendo's Wii Play. Lost Planet was No. 6 and Gears of War was No. 9 - both for the 360.
The lone PS3 game in the top 20 February sales chart was Resistance: Fall of Man at No. 20, although Sony had two PS2 games on the chart (Guitar Hero 2 at No. 10 and EA's made-in-Canada NHL 07 at No. 11) and a PSP title (Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters at No. 16).
Games for Nintendo hardware (Wii, DS, GameCube and GameBoy Advance) occupied 11 of the 20 places on the sales chart with Xbox 360 claiming the remaining five.

Do your thing bunkum. Market is closed. How about hardware?

Add to that strategy a possible price cut on the right moment and you have a very powerful system... And by the way, I forgot about Project Gotham 4 or Shadowrun, two more 1st party titles for this year.
Ok that's Oblivion (which has the new expansion tacked on with more than 50 more addition hours of gameplay), F.E.A.R., Armored Core is exclusive for the time being, and Spiderman 4. The only 2 with 2008 release dates are FFXIII and GT5 (which should be early in 2008, originally they were both scheduled for December). The list is still hefty for 2007 even with the removals. I'm not saying they will close the gap, but if you look at both lists at IGN Sony has more. And Sony has more with confirmed dates too. *If* Microsoft lowers their price so will Sony. That's a given as Sony won't even try to test the waters being almost 300 dollars more expensive. I don't see them opening a gap, I see it staying about even. They might be able to open it by 500,000 consoles but I don't think anymore than that. SCEA is the third lagest game studio in the world, there for they will always have more first party titles than M$ or Nintendo. They are only behind EA and Ubisoft, both of which are massive. Counting in the 2 other territories I actually see PS3 narrowing the worldwide gap with 360 this year.

Why do you think Sony is the third largest publisher in the World? In 2006: In Japan they're #7 and have sold (roughly) 7.5% as many games as Nintendo has ... In North America they're #5 and have sold (roughly) 40% as many games as Nintendo has ... This would mean that they would have had to sell 46 MILLION more copies of games in Europe in order to match Nintendo's sales in 2006; if Nintendo sold 0 copies of games in Europe Sony published games would have to account for more than 66% of games sold in Europe for this to happen.

Well I dont expect the PS3 to be beat by the PSP and the GBA ..that would be odd (although not very strange as the GBA keeps good numbers and outsold the PS3 in december and the PSP is increasing sales recently ) .To be the last of the bunch ,even if it manages good sales (200-220K ) would be a hit to the image of the console .

So accessories+beta with an included bonus game wins this round? And bunkum, don't be such a cocktease :p

He meant programmers and developers I think...not sales. Nintendo still anihilates everyone on a worldwide basis for software sales

Well ,it is a progression .....Sony has right now 100 developer teams between first and second party ...more than Nintendo and Microsoft combined .The combined might of all those (London Studios ,Team Ico ,Liverpool Studios ,Evolution ,Insomniac ,Incognito ,Polyphony ,Factor 5 ,Guerrilla ,Team Ninja ,Naughty DOg ,Media Molecule,Studio Santa Monica ,Ready at Dawn ,etc ) will provide more exclusives that the others combined .Sonys numbers are also in progression in sales numbers ,although obviously they cant compete with Nintendo and its Nintendogs ,Marios and Brain trainings yet .

Yeah Sony has a big number of studios, but Nintendo don't actually develop every game they produce. Basically, they get the ideas, ask a studio to develop the game, then they test the game so that it respects the Nintendo standards of quality. The V Cycle.
