Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 not doomed in Japan

Also remember that the Monster Hunter's PSP counterparts sold MUCH better than their PS2 origins.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

URNotE, this discussion has been floating around VGChartz for a bit. Famitsu Most Wanted and Amazon Best sellers are not representative of the gaming population. It's more of a hardcore userbase. Gundam Musou and Blue Dragon were both in Famitsu Most Wanted, and both have sold less than 300,000 copies LTD, while Pokemon wasn't in the list and is selling like hot gangbuster cakes.

But, you are right. PS3 is not doomed in Japan, ATM.

This is the Sony forum, not the forum for Wii owners to come in and bash the PS3. Last warning before I start short bans for people.

In this case I think the best thing is to simply look at the Gamecube. The Gamecube had a fair number of games that were considered system sellers and a fair amount of very good games. Just from that alone you would think the GC would have sold well right? Well, we all know how the Gamecube did.

The PS3 needs more than FFXIII (in late 2008, a good ways away) to get started running. It needs a better PR before anything just to fix its image, a solid library, and finally a price cut.

Sadly, none of those are likely to happen anytime soon. Sony has been incredibly arrogant and just refuses to change. They aren't even going to get their system seller games until 2008 and that's shady plus they need more than just those to build a decent library for that price. Lastly, the price cut isn't going to happen until they have a decent library.

In short, the price cut isn't going to happen until very late 2008 (which isn't going to happen since it will sell during the holiday season) or mid 2009. By that time Sony will only have its first party developers, cross platform games, and the few random third party games. At that point they will be this gens Gamecube. And don't think for a second that calling the PS3 the new Gamecube is bad. The Gamecube had some incredibly games and the people that had it loved it.

I know I'm new to these forums but I hope this isn't really how the forums are moderated.  Right now I think the 360 is on top od the world but I believe the Wii is going to overcome the beginning of 2008 so people probably would consider me a Wii fanboy (though I don't consider me one ).  The fact I would get threatened by temporary banned because I like to read all the forums and comment when people post silly stuff like this is just silly.  It's not my fault you don't like your precious PS3 being poked at because someone made a silly topic.  As others have said, the Famitsu Most Wanted list really doesn't mean anything and people are calling the OP out on that.

And one more thing while I'm thinking about it: why did someone list the Final Fantasy MMO?  Are they talking about Final Fantasy XI?  I love that game and I would still play it if I had the time but why would you list it?  If you're not talking about FFXI, why would you list some other one thinking it would do well enough to matter?  It would do decently and bring over/back a lot of the FFXI players, but it wouldn't be a major driving force on the MMO front.

twesterm - Not all of the posts were out of line, but several of them were. Posting that you disagree is fine (ie: the top 10 Famitsu most wanted hasn't always led to greater sales). Bringing up the Wii/DS purely to bash the PS3 in the Sony forum or senseless anti-anything posts with no reasoning or backup are not.

stof made me remember something.

DS games are the biggest sellers in Japan as of now, yet looking at that list it haas almost no DS games on it, save for 2. Also rememeber that Animal Crossing, Nintendogs and Brain Age were never on the most wanted list.

Also, sorry to go to this, but the impace of FF on sales of the system. Looking at the most resient one, it only solld ~2.5 million. This is with the PS2 larger the life userbase. Sales may be slumping for FF. Evemn FF3 didn't dop that great with how many people own a DS. I don't expect FF13 to sell amazingly well. In fact, 2 million may ever been a bit much now. Plus, as everyone has said, FF games don't push as many conasoles as they seem to.

Is this a fair assessment FFXII was well reviewed and to a console base of 120 million the largest you will find on a PS2 for a FF game sold roughly 5 million or about to 4% of the owners of the PS2 by analogy and assuming the PS3 has 15 million in sells by March of 2008 which I think is quite generous FFXIII would sell around 600-700k copies assuming you had the same type of user base as the PS2 and that lets say the 700k were all new users because I don't know the people that have a PS3 now aren't the ones that are the most likely buyers of the game in the first place that still doesn't give the PS3 a huge leap 700k sells is still below what the Wii does a month. I don't think this should be considered an attack on the PS3 just a reality of the moment in all actuality I think the early adopters will all mostly pick up this game giving it sells much closer to 4-5 million but if they are the primary people picking up this game it doesn't leave much room for the new adopters that would boost hardware sells.

Late to the Party, sorry all.

I look at the top 5, and i see.

DQ9, a guaranteed 5million seller

Biohazard, a perennial "blip" on the Japanese Market - Wont break a million

MGS4, again, a blip on the market, nothing more - Wont break a million

FF13 - An absolute JUGGERNAUGHT, but will the lack of an install base hurt it, honestly, im expecting FF13 to slip to 2009

Monster Hunter - Great sales on a handheld, but on a console, 1 million is stretching it.

If we expand it to the top ten, we get...

A second DQ Game, this one for Wii, smaller install base, means smaller sales, but this one could be a true system seller, and COULD be the first next gen game with a million sale opening week.

Zelda - Phantom Hourglass - Zelda is Waning in Japan, but DS is hot, this SHOULD sell a million

Super Robot Taisen - Got nothing for this one, could be a hit on PS2

SSBM - Another million seller, almost guaranteed

Lost Odyssey - XBox 360 in Japan, enough said.

XBOX LIVE Gamertag: QuantumTarntno

Crackdown - Enchanted Arms - Oblivion - Samurai Warriors 2 - GRAW - GRAW2 -Lost Planet - Guitar Hero 2 - Star Trek Legacy - Double Agent - WWE 2007

Wii 4237-4425-6442-7626

Mario Party 8 - Rayman Raving Rabbids - Excite Truck - Zelda: Twilight Princess - Godfather - Wii Play

this and price drop. for some reason i really see Monster Hunter 3 on multiplatform since its from Capcom

Nope, Japanese centric series (360 Japan sales flop), don't see it happening.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

FF XIII systems seller in Japan for the PS3, less so but still in other regions too.

There should be a price cut before that comes out, then Sony can really take advantage of that, also they better hope somehow SE is gonna make it turn based (Which I doubt) which will appeal to Japanese even more...
