Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rockstar's output this generation has been atrocious.

Here's a list of rock stars releases last gen

2006: Rockstar presents table tennis

2007: manhunt 2 (this is a cross gen title that released on ps2 and Wii at the same time.

2008: GTA 4

2008: Midnight club: LA

2009: GTA: Chinatown wars

2009: beaterator

2010: red dead redemption

2011: LA noire

2012: Max Payne 3

2013: GTA V

Then moving onto the current gen

2018: red dead redemption 2

They have gone from making 10 games in one generation to just making 1. I understand that developing games is getting more expensive at takes longer, but going from 10 to 1 is just ridiculous. They also made more single player DLC in the last gen.

It's a bit unfair. GTA Online is pretty much a different game altogether and GTA V is cross-gen as well. But yeah, they have fallen behind massively.

If we count cross gen, then last gen also gets bully. I don't keep up to date with gta online are the updates for that big?

You are missing Bully and Episodes from Liberty City, pretty big expansions tbh.

I left bully off because there was a gap between its ps2 release and its release on newer hardware. I decided to leave expansions off. But I did mention that they made a lot more single player DLC last gen.

It's honestly really simple. GTA Online makes more money for them than pretty much all of those other games combined, so they don't really have the incentive to produce more games. It's sad and unfortunately another sign of the where the AAA video game industry is heading right now. It's all about these big live service/online games that they can monetize in perpetuity rather than actually developing new and interesting games.

yeah it's really a damn shame that GTA V is so successful. It's also not even close to being my favourite GTA game.
This games as a service attitude is completely killing creativity.

That's just how R* rolls now. T2 is pleased with how GTAO has worked out, so that's pretty much where their focus is headed from here on. Look at how GTA V got zero SP DLC/content added after launch, vs GTAO.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

As much work probably went into GTA V and RDR2 as went into the games from 2008-2012. They're massive, I dread to think how many man-hours are going to be put into GTA VI, they always have to one-up themselves.

Games just take a lot longer to make now, especially openworld games, but look at other developers.

Insomniac (PS3/360) - 10 Games: 3 Resistance Games, 6 Ratchet & Clank Games, Fuse.
Insomniac (PS4/XBO) - 3 Games: Ratchet & Clank, Spiderman, Sunset Overdrive.

If crossgen games count towards the oldest they release on like you do then the following developers look a little worse:

Bioware (PS3/360) - 6 Games: 3 Mass Effect Games, 3 Dragon Age Games
Bioware (PS4/XBO) - 2 Games: ME:Andromeda, Anthem

Bungie (PS3/360) - 4 Games: 3 Halo Games, Destiny
Bungie (PS4/XBO) - 1 Game: Destiny 2

If we look at the Halo series irrespective of the developer you can see the releases have slowed down. The 360 got 4 new Halo FPS games, the XBO currently has 1.

Bethesda developed Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3 for PS3/360 and on PS4 only Fallout 4 and 76. Skyrim released 5 years after Oblivion yet here we are 8 years after Skyrim and who knows when TES VI will come out.

Mostly the only developers releasing as many games as they used to are the almost annualised games. Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Fifa, Battlefield, Call of Duty or AA games rather than AAA.

Thanks, there's a couple of other Insomniac games such as Songs of the Deep which I wasn't sure whether to include as I think they're much smaller titles, though tbh one or two of the Ratchet games are quite small also.

They basically suck now. From one of my favorite devs, to one of my more disliked. Ah well. Sunrise, sunset.
