Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The Fall of Xbox - Video by Videogamedunkey

Video was just a list wars of a brief snapshot in time. Xbox has fallen from their peak, but every console maker has gone through dark periods of time. Sony and Nintendo have both experienced prolonged periods of time with they faltered as well. This has been a terrible generation for Xbox, that is definitely true, but I wouldn’t throw the towel in on them yet. They appear to building towards something great. They seem poised to come out swinging next gen and are probably the best positioned console maker to capitalize on the inevitable digital future in games.

It is quite shallow, isn't it? And i dont know of any youtube gaming channel that really goes indepth, beginning with the pre-xbox era and give a detailed run up until the here and now.

Indeed. Nintendo has never gotten a pass. Infact Super Mario 3D World while excellent was panned on forums ( it didn't really help the Wii U sell either but the Wii U had many issues) Nintendo actually has it rougher than most. People usually expect excellence from their Zelda and Mario main releases, if a Zelda is not a 10/10 game people start complaining about it. Nintendo never gets a pass if BotW and Mario Odyssey are top ten all time games it is because Nintendo always strives for excellence and innovation with in their own IPs. BotW is a prime example of this, with in its open world the game does things that no other open world game does.

I think that just highlights the problem, their games are criticized by gamers, but a mainline Mario/Zelda game will always be a 90+ rated game. The critics do go too easy on these two franchises and also Rockstar when throwing out those 10s.

And it's super obvious too, because these games regularly lose out the GOTY awards to lower rated titles when everyone starts voting for the best game of the year. Which just proves that even critics don't believe these games are as good as they rated them.

I think it was universally agreed that BotW was the game of the year. Have you ever played that game? I agree on RDR2 its Metacritic rating was too high, the critics were blinded by how masterfully crafted its world was, but I have found the game to be a tad boring on the single player side of things. But man Zelda and Mario deserved the all of the praise that they got.

Not even close.

On this forum if people think back to 2017....

on PS4 side:  Persona 5, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn,...
on Switch side:  Breath of the Wild, Mario Oddessey

Alot of people would say BoTW was the game of the year.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but my 1 minute analysis of Microsoft Xbox one is:
- focused too hard on set top box and Kinect advertising instead of games at the reveal
- after about 1.5 years on the market, began retreating back to pc
- now focused on cloud; next Xbox if it exists will be designed to serve cloud/game streaming, MS will focus on this battle 99%

2015 - The Witcher 3 - 257
2013 - The Last of Us - 249
2011 - Skyrim - 227
2018 - God of War -190
2017 - Breath of the Wild - 189
2016 - Uncharted 4 - 165
2013 - GTA V - 160
2014 - Dragon Age Inquisition -134
2018 - Red Dead Redemption 2 - 130
2010 - Red Dead Redemption - 111
2009 - Uncharted 2 - 111
2010 - Mass Effect 2 -101
2016 - Overwatch - 102

189 is pretty close to universal recognition as GotY. Keep in mind Mario Odyssey nabbed the award from many publications that year becoming a Zelda rival for the titles.

Idk or care how much profits a company makes, I care about the games they make. Losing money to solidify your position is also a strategic decision.

MS is doing it now with Gamepass, they're losing a ton of money on it in hopes that it will make a return in the future.

Similarly Sony was losing money last gen funding a ton of games letting their studios experiment and grow and it's paying off now. This gen they have half a dozen 10+ million selling IPs and more to come, with most of them looking to hit 15+ million, and Spiderman & TLOU2 will likely be 20+ million sellers. For comparison MS has ever had 1 game break 10 million.

The fact that the only time MS was remotely competitive with Sony was when Sony had their absolute lowest moment in playstation history says it all.

We are talking about the success of the brands not what you prefer to play.

PS didn't lose money because they invested into there games, they lost money because the hardware was a mess at launch, they also lost money on many 1st party titles and that wasn't because they were building, they just simply overspent on games that just didn't sell that well.

GamePass is definitely a long term plan. Lets not compare Sony's PS3 losings to MS's GamePass plan.

Also, why are you bringing up this gen? We are talking about the PS3 and 360. Sony is even luckier than Xbox this gen than Xbox was last gen because I can also argue the exact same point with the PS4 being super successful when Nintendo and Xbox had there lowest points in there history. Last gen, Sony screwed up which allowed the 360 to take off and the 360 did extremely well but still had big competition with the Nintendo Wii and the PS3 fight back. This gen Sony had two companies fall on there swords and basically had a free ride to success with no major threat like a Wii until Switch released.

And as d21lewis replied to you said "Let's give credit where credit is due."

Yes I’ve played BOTW, and it’s the only Nintendo game that has been a GOTY since like ever, but all Mario and Zelda games score similarly high and lose GOTY to lower scoring games. Just like Rockstar’s games.

As a consumer, it's hard to justify purchasing an Xbox One when to me it seems like their games end up on PC most of the time anyways. I'm planning on getting all the major consoles next gen if things go as planned, so hopefully their next console will be as good or better than the 360. I don't pay much attention to Xbox news, so I might not be seeing things as they truly are, but I do indeed see the Xbox One as a poor choice for a console for any gamer, given the PS4 exists with better games. For the people who have Xbox One but not PS4, why?

This coming year will be a crucial time. Everyone who loves videogaming needs to do their part in making sure MS never rises from the ashes of XB1.
MS is a blight on this industry and the artistic integrity of videogames and the sooner they leave it the better it is for all of us.

Calm down, man

One thing is to prefer the games that are on other platforms. Another is to hope that a specific platform will drop out of the game industry. As a PS4 and PC owner, I haven't really been able to justify buying an XB this gen, since its games are on PC and since I've had less time to game. But that doesn't mean that I see anything positive with Xbox leaving the game industry. I absolutely loved the 360 pre Kinect era and might as well love a future XB console again.

What you need to remember is consumers always benefit from competition. Microsoft has contributed with a lot of great things in the console gaming industry and as competitors PS and XB have pushed and learned a lot from each other.
