You know, I don't think this is a complete brand reboot either. While it certainly doesn't have Wii in the name, because that would just be weird, it does seem to be at the very least a spiritual successor to Wii Fit, and they kept the "Fit" branding. I think Nintendo might regard this as a coherent brand, the "Fit" series, where they'll put fitness based QoL software. This would go along side the "Brain" series, where you'd put Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, and probably some future mental fitness based QoL software they're developing now for Switch with the word "Brain" in the title.

I think the reason they haven't just gone with the "Switch Fit"/Wii Fit ++ branding approach is cos they want to emphasize the "adventure" aspect in an attempt to appeal more to those who didn't consider Wii Fit enough of a "real game", or to avoid tying themselves to something deemed passe.

Since Splatoon's breakout success they also seemed to have gained more confidence in pushing for fresh new IPs instead of feeling like they have to tie everything to an already popular brand.

Not sure why some are still rolling the "Nintendo didn't make new IPs until Splatoon" argument since that's always be a load of bullshit. Sure, you can argue that they played it too safe in the Wii U days, but it's not like Nintendo didn't like making new things and then Splatoon came along and suddenly they do.

I never said Nintendo didn't make new IPs until Splatoon.

Not saying you said it. But some Nintendo fans billed Splatoon as "the first new IP since Pikmin". Now if you mean the first character-driven new IP from EAD since Pikmin, that would've been a valid argument, one that even Nintendo agrees with. But first new IP since Pikmin completely disregards titles like Brain Age, Nintendogs, Xenoblade, among others.

Gotta say the box art looks interesting, using the ring to fire fireballs at enemies in your path, could we be seeing some form of AR or VR using the Switch system, it has me intrigued which is what Nintendo are great at doing before pillaging my wallet for money hah.

Side of the box is advertising "custom workout" I think this is going to very much be a unique and custom workout solution, wonder will Joy Con drift allow you to exercise slightly off center?

Absolutely.

Most people wouldn't "run" stepping on their room carpet, but with Wii Fit, many did as well as they do using iPhone apps for that. However Wii Fit was much more fun. There was a snow game on Wii Fit for training your abs that was absolutely brilliant. Much fun than doing abs boring drills.

I think the best strategy would've been to market it as a Fit successor, having everything fit had plus the adventure as a new thing.

They did. Wii Fit was used in hospitals to entertain patients, recommended by doctors. Obese people lost weight using that. It works. I know people that use/used and my family and I used. You sweat using that, your muscles get sore, it's the truth.

Fitness apps still exist and many do exercise at home using all sorts of things like videos, apps and such.

I disagree. For me it'd be simpler as just Switch Fit, with the same content plus the new thing.

If they wanted this to have everything Wii Fit has, then they'd really need to have the balance board.  That would hike up the price by 40-50 bucks, making this an even heftier investment to those who didn't have a balance board (assuming they could make it compatible with old ones).

They may have been able to use the branding. But there are also benefits to making it a new thing.  I think overall I think it's a better marketing decision to make it brand new.  I think it's better that people see it as a new product rather than Wii Fit ++

The ring works quite well as the balance board successor. It seems to me that the ring not only helps correcting the user's posture but adds the strength function. In comparison to the balance board, it loses the weight scale.

The balance board still could be added as an extra for those who wanted to buy or for those who already own one and wants to plug.

God bless You.

There are alot of Wii Fit activities that would be either either awkward or impossible with the Ring-con/leg strap combo.  The juggling minigame, soccer heading, hula hoop, and rhythm boxing just to name a few.  For any of these to work, the leg strap would have to function as the balance board, which I don't think it can, and you'd need two joycons.

You're right in terms of specific exercises and activites, but the ring brings new exercises and activities that covers the same muscles that the board was covering. After the ring, the board can be used as an add-on for a few exercises. That's why I the ring can be seen as a board successor. It doesn't emulate the same exercises, but it covers many bases to the point that the board isn't a requirement to call this new version a Fit successor.
