I've only played an hour, so I cannot comment too much on the game, far too early. So far the voice acting seems really good. The battle system is robust. Graphically the game is underwhelming, but I expected that going in via the previews. It doesn't look bad, but it certainly doesn't look built from the ground up on the Switch. I do wonder if the game was originally destined for another system. Overall, I like it. But again, really early in the game.

I love the graphics style. It reminds me of Valkyria Chronicles and BotW.

The style is fine, but the resolution on the battle field leaves a bit to be desired, as does the detail/texture.  It isn't a big deal, just something I have noticed.

Are you playing it in handheld mode or T.V. mode? What would you say the resolution is at?

TV only, specifically a 65 inch TV. Perhaps resolution isn't the correct terminology, lack of AA? The edges are jagged, IMHO. Especially compared to something like Mario vs Rabbids. Again, don't get me wrong, this isn't a huge deal. Strategy games are made by their battle system, not graphics.

I hate critics. Below are reasons why their scores suck ass.

They are rushed and working. A hugely anticipated/hyped game comes out and they want review out in time. They likely haven't got as much time in the game to notice all the bugs or gotten bored or been forced to use micros, ect. They rushed through game and made snap judgement. Game still not out so hype still strong and they could be riding the hype and overinflate score.

In same regard, they playing FIFA for the 10th time. It's FIFA. They bored and just score it the same with article adding in features it mentions on back of box or quick youtube video EA puts out saying new features.

They are paid to score it some way or another. Shilling. They get free stuff, ad dollars. invites, ect. No way are they partial.

They hate or die hard love the genre/franchise. Clearly biased and unless you feel identical to them the review is worthless.

Do you think they are rushed because of evidence, or just because it suits your conclusion?

I stay away from sports games, because I agree with you about how they get easy scores. Especially easy aggregate scores, because when a sports game comes out every Tom, Dick, and Harry outlet, that doesn't normally review games, reviews it highly. Even if every regular games outlet with integrity gave it a mediocre score, the overall aggregate would still be high thanks to the legions of non-gaming sites that review them.

I think you are making big assumptions about them getting paid. How the heck do Crackdown 3, Anthem, Sea of Thieves, etc. get horrible scores if reviewers are bribed?

Reviewers that hate a certain genre are often not asked to do said review. Editors choose from amoung the staff that has the most experience in the genre, and wants to review said game.

Diehard fans that love a series are often the most critical of said series. This makes them good reviewers, because they will pick out every last flaw in the game. Just look at how diehard Poke'mon fans are already treating Sword/Shield.

I feel that we also cannot rely solely on the diehard fans. I cannot say they are the most objective because they have a lot of emotional weight on the series, whether they like something or not. Plus, with all the nitpicking of flaws, I do not think I would enjoy a game if I have to be reminded of the flaws of the game.

Every game has their flaws, there is no way around it.

As you talked about Sword and Shield. While I can understand diehards pointing out flaws from the DEMO, I still keep my eyes on the game because I am personally interested in playing it, flaws and all. I have enjoyed every generation in their own way, as a long-time fan, so opinions from diehard fans will not stop me from buying Sword and Shield, especially since I like the new Pokemon and the Wild Area.

Its similar in Fire Emblem. Some hardcore fans are not receptive to Awakening. However, its one of my favorite games of all-time. It just all depends on how you enjoy the game when you play it.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone express anything negative about Awakening - the worst I've seen is people saying it's not the best in the series, which isn't exactly criticism.

I've read some criticisms on the FE reddit. Some say because of Awakening, we've gotten the games we've had as of now, which is a negative for some in that forum. That it strayed away from the "true" aspects of Fire Emblem just for the sake of getting more sales and all. Then again, its reddit.

Hey all, it's been a REALLY long time since I posted. I saw that critical reception for Three Houses has been great. Better than the meta on my fav FE game(and one of my favorite games overall) ever, Path of Radiance on the gamecube. I just had to hop back on my favorite forum and say that after all these years, Nintendo is still kicking butt and taking names. So happy for Nintendo on this successful launch day, and happy for the devs as well. Great news for the IP that it is still reviewing well and seems to be healthy. I can't wait to dig into this and I hope everyone who decides to pick it up is as happy with it as I will probably be. I'm a giddy. I can't wait. I haven't been this excited about a game in a long time. Go, go Fire Emblem!!

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I cannot fucking WAIT to get home from work tonight and play the everyloving shit out of this game. You likely won't see me for the rest of the weekend.

I'm really disappointed by what I'm reading about the romance options in Three Houses. Seems like a colossal step back in terms of romance. Fates was basically a character shipping simulator, you could pair any characters you wanted together and they would fall in love and have kids. However, it seems in Three Houses only the player character Byleth can romance others, and you only get a single romance scene that affects the epilogue; no kids, no shipping. They basically entirely cut my favorite thing about the series.

Definitely agree that the shipping simulator aspect was a delightful addition that did a lot to grow the series and its fanbase, and will be sorely missed in this outing. Given how well Fates sold and how well the shipping aspect has been received among fans, particularly the newer ones, I don't see it going away completely anytime soon. That said, I think Awakening did it better than Fates in one aspect, that of tying it into the narrative. The kids were fundamental to the Awakening narrative, you couldn't properly have the story as we know it without them. I loved that. Fates didn't accomplish that, as much as I loved it and the shipping aspect to pieces. If they weren't able to come up with a way to make it make sense in Three Houses, I take it as a good sign that they removed it. I think they'll see that the fans miss it and do more to design a way to include kids in future titles. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic though. Still, money talks, and the most money they ever got from Fire Emblem was from the shipping simulator Fire Emblems, so even the cynic in me is hopeful we'll see the feature again.

Oh, Awakening definitely caused a shift in direction for the series, that much is clear - look at Shikamaru's post for example. That is a criticism Fire Emblem fans do have, but they don't blame Awakening directly for it as that shift in direction only fully materialized in Fates.

I think its more that they blame Awakening for what was eventually to come. After all, it became the best-selling game in the franchise, until Fates. Granted, I have not played Fates and even the things I heard about it don't sound that bad to me, or at least make me feel that the game sounds bad.
