I played Altered Beast on PS2 and was midly fun. Certainly I would welcome an AAA Altered Beast game. Not sure why you think Battletoads couldn't be AAA. At the time of the original they were cutting edge, as were other Rare games that came after.

For me it is stranger that people would be excited that after 30 years they are bringing the game but on a lesser form. This isn't a no name game, it is one with great cult following, and to revive it needs to be top notch or don't bother with it.

That Altered Beast game on PS2 certainly wasn't AAA or a success by any measure.

Cutting edge in the 90s is very different than cutting edge today. The reason studios make less games now is because AAA games are much more complex and expensive. You have to consider that when you ask for a cutting edge Battletoads game today.

I don't see this as a lesser form, its more like par for the course. Cult following doesn't mean this IP can sell many millions of units per se. Frankly, MS has other IPs that more people would like to see revived.

If Battletoads were to get a AAA game, in my mind it would be a project similar to God of War, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, etc. That's what a modern AAA beat em' up looks like to me these days. That would be interesting, but we didn't expect a AAA game nor was that hyped.

Maybe in the future MS will work with Koei Tecmo to create a Battletoads Warriors game! That would be huge among the Battletoads fans in Japan...

Frankly, I want Battletoads to get every type of game. Classic 2D beat em up, AAA game, Dynasty Warriors clone, a VR game, a kart racer, a party game, maybe an open world Grand Theft Battletoads and lastly they can make the World of Battletoads online MMO! I mean this IP is so huge and has so much potential, MS is just wasting it! Battletoads has the potential to be a Mario Bros killer!

I'm a little confused, you say it shouldn't be an AAA because it wouldn't sell much, but then you say it have potential to be a Mario Killer.

I was wanting an AAA Battletoads. I didn't say Altered Beast was AAA (but certainly seemed a bigger project than this BattleToads, and closer to the top games of the time it released), but that I liked it while this idea for BattleToads I don't like much.

I personally don't think a AAA budget BToads will do well. Its not that sort of game. Some games need a new direction and who knows where this art style takes it. Could lead to better made cartoon series etc. BToads has the protential to be anything as its such a great IP.

This can be MS testing the waters of the IP and seeing how it sells on face value.

Also not all Mario games are AAA. Mario Tennie, Party, Golf, Soccer, Run and many other Mario games hang around the AA bracket. There is nothing wrong with doing that. There are critics that actually like this new art style so that tells us something and that there is a market for this type of design.

Its also harder to animate which is very time consuming so there's alot more effort put into the designs than most want to think.

I don't know exactly what you're confused about. I don't think Battletoads is as popular as you think, I guess that's what I'm saying.

Hey, I would love some sort of AAA stab at Battletoads, but it wouldn't be anything like the classic games if you were gonna go that route. Like I said, it would probably be more like God of War, DmC, etc. What we're actually getting is pretty much what I expected, although I'm always disappointed with this modern cartoon style.

I'm saying a AAA Battletoads makes as much or less sense than many old IPs getting the AAA treatment. I want many old IPs to become mega budget modern games, its just not gonna happen.

Double Dragon never got the AAA treatment. But I loved Double Dragon Advance and Double Dragon Neo, some of the greatest games in the genre. With that said, I will reserve judgment on this new Battletoads until I actually play it.

There is always that game from a company that people pretends they give a flying fuck about and act like wanted it Forever . Battletoads is like this. Who Cares, Microsoft had dozens of indies in the conference that looked 100 Times better than this thing that looks like a browser game from Miniclip website.

I agree, I think MS gets bugged about Battletoads a lot so doing anything with it is just fan service.

I look at it this way, MS doesn't really care about Battletoads and rightfully so. They need to concern themselves with games that actually move hardware.

Regardless, they found a studio interested in the project and threw money at it. As someone who played a lot of Battletoads as a kid, I hope its a good game. But lets stop pretending this is an important project that the masses wanted.

It was a joke, I went on a tangent because few really care about Battletoads. Frankly, if this game sucks I'd be concerned MS may never want to touch the IP again.

On a side note, MS really should launch this on Switch day one. Its not a game that moves hardware and it would boost revenue.

I have to say I was disappointing to see they didn't give a glamorous treatment to the reboot. This could have been an AAA beat them up that have been missing on the market.

Oh yeah, AAA Battletoads game?

I'm waiting for the AAA Altered Beast game. These are the massive, mega budget projects that the masses are demanding!

I'm responding from Bizarro World by the way...

The audacity to think Sega would do a AAA Altered Beast ahead of Streets of Rage 2 or Golden Axe 2.  I caste you into the depths of beat them up hell.

Yeah, Altered Beast seemed funnier in my mind.

I want Crytek to make the next Golden Axe and Streets of Rage game. Just recycle Ryse, change the assets, I would enjoy that.

Well I hope the BT they release is up to your taste and you enjoy it, will keep thinking they could have gone much above on it and make the game something to hype for.

BattleToads and especially this one is a perfect game for Gamepass and we are probably going to see a lot more of MS and Rare older games getting this type of treatment. The reason I say this is because games like this are made for Gamepass and Gamepass will usher a lot of these AA or smaller projects as it build up its content. You will still have the big hits like Halo, Gears Forza which pushes the subs but those games will also fun a lot of these smaller projects because the goal of MS is to make Gamepass a auto sub when someone gets a MS Console. With PC subs as well, the market for smaller and mid tier projects from MS opens up big time.

Anyway as to this game, I am more concerned about the gameplay then the graphics. 4 player beat em ups are games that get played a lot within my household and graphics is the least of requirements we have.
