Here Are The Top-20 Games Of The Heisei Era As Voted By Famitsu Readers

As Japan makes way to transition into the new Reiwa period, Famitsu recently held a poll for its readers to vote for their favorite games that released in the Heisei period (Jan 8, 1989 – May 1, 2019), and this week’s issue of the magazine has revealed the full top-20 list. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

Below are the top-20 titles that were voted in by 7,158 Famitsu readers:

• 3. NieR: Automata
• 4. Final Fantasy VII

• 6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
• 7. Final Fantasy X
• 8. Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow
• 9. Dragon Quest V
• 10. Xenogears
• 11. Vainglory
• 12. Suikoden II
• 13. Mother 2 (Earthbound)
• 14. Splatoon 2
• 15. Tactics Ogre
• 16. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite)
• 17. Kingdom Hearts
• 17. (tie) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

While we don’t have the number of votes for the full list, it is mentioned that Chrono Trigger’s #1 place happened thanks to the overwhelming support from fans in their 30s. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild placed #2 in overall votes, but was actually the top-voted title for readers in their 40s. Meanwhile, NieR: Automata mostly got its votes from readers in their teens and 20s, and was actually #1 most voted title for those age groups.

It’s also worth noting that Vainglory by Super Evil Megacorp snuck its way onto the list as the only Western-developed game, which is a bit of a head-scratcher looking at its company but let’s not forget that it’s mostly a list made to have fun with the Famitsu readers, so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

I swear, I love Chrono Trigger but it is a little overrated. Romancing Saga 3 and Final Fantasy 5-6, are better games.

Seeing Breath of the Wild in the top 3 puts a smile on my face. My favorite game this generation.

I need to give Chrono Trigger another try again soon. I tried playing it on a tiny DS screen and couldn't get into it. I'd probably like it more on a normal TV screen.

Awesome to see NieR: Automata so high on the list!

Also this makes me wonder how do people even choose what version of Monster Hunter to vote for? Aside from the obvious vote going to a portable title lol how do you even decide between PSP and 3DS titles. I was always under the impression the 3rd PSP title was the most beloved in Japan.

Is Chrono Trigger that good?

I've never heard of Vainglory, what is it?

Chrono Trigger is a timeless classic. On the other hand, I think Mother 3 is better than Earthbound...

Geez, I need to play a lot of games from that list.
