You're mis-remembering about DMC1 I think. The "siren alert" is only for fights with Shadow, the black cat. It's a part of his actual theme, it's not an alert anytime you start combat. 99% of the time you won't hear it in DMC1, it's just really memorable because Shadow is possibly the most annoying and interesting enemy in the game.

Also, I'm a little surprised to see you say that DMC1's atmosphere is "lost" in DMC3, especially when you say that DMC4 is a "return to form" (though maybe you meant in some other way). DMC3 had the closest to DMC1's atmosphere in the series I think and it might be the only one that tried to capture that atmosphere. For example you mention earlier that the games now have you hoping around from location to location, which is true, and I do miss the feeling of just being in one island. But this kind of thing was nearly replicated in DMC3 because most of your time was spent in Temen-ni-gru. The only time you get out of it is when you get back to the city street or hop into the mouth of the great air whale, but even then you could argue you leave the Mansion in DMC1 to go to the fortress. Admittedly, the verticality of the Temen-ni-gru sells it's feeling of being connected short, as it's much harder to make a layout in your mind of the tower and you can't see the physical connection so much. But it's very close to 1, it even has a lot of the same kinds of secrets.

As for Dante losing himself over the years ... it's a bit hard to say. I think that Kamiya and Itsuno have said some very revealing things, but these are the kind of things I've just heard second hand from the fanbase. Kamiya I think said that the Dante after DMC1 no longer feels like "his" Dante (he's the creator of DMC1), and Itsuno has said before he wanted to make something that related to him more, which is why he made a younger Dante in DMC3 and why he eventually made Nero (and in fact while the game was originally teased as a sequel to DMC3 timeline wise with it's TBS 2005 trailer showing a young Dante, I think at some point Itsuno even questioned if Dante should be in DMC4, to which one of the other higher ups on the dev team said he needed to be).

Dante in DMC3 is much younger so it's understandable why he's like that. Dante in DMC4 is barely a character honestly, I love his cutscenes but he's basically just comedic relief in the body of an immortal god.

For what it's worth, and this is just a new fans opinion who binged the games in a span of a month, I think DMC5 Dante is the closet to DMC1's, while retaining the funniness of Itsuno's Dante. For example in DMC1 a lot of Dante's jokes were just to belittle his enemies, and in DMC5 there's that scene in the trailers where instead of making a smart ass remark against his enemy he just uses the enemies razor tail to shave his face. He still makes jokes, but a lot of the time they're relating to what the actual characters are doing, it's a lot more down to earth. He's very serious at points and feels like an actual character this time.

Yes, the Shadow song is the one I had in mind. I love this little fucker, look at him go!

He's so fucking cute! He attacks even when he is vulnerable.

I didn't regard DMC3 as atmospheric. It felt more action-oriented in terms of character and presentation.

There is something about textures in the game that make walls feel somewhat flat and drawn.

The "return to form" I mentioned about DMC4 is more akin to a feel. Perhaps we could have different opinions about it, but there is something about lightning and shadows, and character animations (Dante/Nero in DMC4 feels solid and has a flow of movement that I find similar to DMC1).

DmC feels a lot like DMC3, the character feels lightweight and as if it "skips" animations or frames in exchange for fast executions of movements and attacks, and change of animations. It's hard to explain, but to me both DMC3 and DmC give me this feeling like the character you are moving (and the characters you are fighting against) are hallowed and/or are floating in the air.

Plus, as far as I remember, DMC4 feels a lot more "medieval", as in having places with cathedrals and enemies with shields and armors.

DMC4 is certainly very colorful and has very bright set pieces, but there is something about illumination and shadows that make it atmospheric in some scenes, like for example:

"Shadows" in DMC3:

It's like instead of proper lightning and shadows, what we have in DMC3 are environments in which "shadows" are drawn in the textures instead of occlusion by shadows. I think there are some exceptions to this though.

DMC4 to me is closer to the first one although as I said, it still isn't the same. That is why I compared DMC4 as a mixture of DMC1 and 3.

Yes, Dante is very over-the-top in DMC4, specially that dramatic "presentation" he did in one of his last missions. lol

I didn't read your last paragraph because you started talking about DMC5 and I haven't played it yet so, no spoilers for me. lol

I guess we just differ there. I can sort of see what you're saying though, maybe the lighting is more boring in 3? I can't really think of examples that counter yours, but I don't think it impacts the atmosphere enough to not make it the most like DMC1 that any DMC game has ever been since. Although to be fair, you used the area in DMC4 that is the most like DMC1 : P

So have you just completely ignored any DMC5 material on the internet? If so you're in for a great time! The scene I was referring was in a commercial but it's probably better if you don't see anything relating to the game. Lots of DMC1 fan service ...

Yes, I've only seen the DMC5 review by Easy Allies (always go to them for reviews) and they do a great job of reviewing games while evading spoilers but aside from that (and some low blow spoiler thanks to the video suggestions by the YouTube algorithm) I have kept myself in the dark about the game. lol

Nice! Hope you have fun. Wish I could play it for the first time again.

Thanks! With your comment about those nods to the first DMC I am more intrigued to play DMC5 now. lol

I voted DmC just to make people ask why DmC has so many votes.

It's currently between DmC and 3 right now since I'm not far enough along into DMC5 to make a judgement on it (really like it though)!
