Forums - Nintendo Discussion - I Want to Buy a Switch! Waiting on Potential New Hardware Announcements.

I have been interesting in buying a Switch ever since it was announced. To be honest I was not gaming much at the time though so I found it hard to justify the purchase. I was too busy with other things. Now things are calming down and I want to get back into gaming. I also want to buy a Switch as a present for myself for getting through that period of hard work.

Even before the rumors of new hardware started swirling around, I figure 2019 would be around the time for a hardware refresh or at least a price cut. So I am waiting to see what hardware announcements Nintendo makes before buying. Regarding the rumors I have to say I would not be interested in a strictly portable version of the Switch even though I think it would be a great move from a business perspective for Nintendo. Another home-centric version could be interesting but I would have to what changes it makes. Honestly I will most likely just buy the current sku when it has an official price cut but I like to keep my options open.

What scenario do you think is most likely?

I don't think you'll ever see the Switch lose its ability to switch, doing so muddies the waters and makes keeping games consistent impossible. I can see a Switch Lite model that's redesigned and has better battery life coming later this year, but it won't get announced until E3 at the earliest. If there's things you want to play now, jump in now

All I'll say is ...

But what if there is no new hardware or price cut this year? Then you'll be missing out on an entire year of fun for an opportunity that never came? Should have bought a Switch.

But what if a few months after you've bought a Switch, in 2020, they announce a new Switch model? Sure, you just got a perfectly fine Switch, but that's all it is ... "ok". Can't miss out on the new model everyone is getting. Should buy a new Switch!

But what if shortly after that the other model comes out?...

Yeah, I feel pretty dumb buying one a few weeks before they announced new hardware. I'm probably gonna sell it and upgrade IF the new console is something totally different.

Switch not getting a non-portable version almost guarantees I don't get one until way aftermarket when I get one for <$100.

I think it is evident now why the weekly numbers have fallen from 255000 to 235000

...

Why not?  If you don't want a portable version, just let it sit in its dock.  That's pretty much what I do.

I only want like 3 games max atm (I only play RPGs and 4x mostly). It'd be a waste of money.

I think they'll offer a very slightly improved version that will be used to justify forestalling any price cut, and a trimmed down version no-one will really want.

Hopefully all announced at or sufficiently leaked by E3.

Okay, but what does it be portable have to do with that?

First the hope is that a non-portable version would be cheaper.  A console is only worth it to me if the total cost of games is more than the total cost of the console.  $299.99 is a steep hill to climb.  If I splurged recklessly I could maybe get to 199.99 in games that i'd play.

Secondly I hate paying for features I will never use.

I'd say you can wait until E3, if they really have a new model they will surely announce it there.
