There's been speculation since the Switch launched and soon we'll get to see whether Nintendo still makes dedicated handhelds/home consoles.

If the Switch Pro can't (easily) be used as a HH then it's fair to consider it a home console, likewise if the Switch Lite can't connect to the TV then it's surely a handheld.

So, place your bets.

Will the new models of Switch be able to switch?

My answer is yes.

The dock/battery might be an accessory but any new Switch model will be capable of playing in HH or home console mode. At worst, it might mean that home-console mode doesnt see a power increase and the handheld model might need an extra large battery pack to truly be considered portable but regardless, the Switch will continue to switch.

If the two rumored models exist, maybe the Mini will be handheld only as it would allow Nintendo to make it cheaper, but the Pro will still retain the same Switch capabilities.

I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a handheld only version.

The controls are probably not detachable on the Switch mini/lite and the dock would probably not be included. Also only basic rumble (similar to vibration mode of smartphones) instead of HD rumble.

The saved costs would allow it to lower the entry price substantially, which is important for a 2DS/3DS successor.

A mini dock would be available as accessory and of course you could connect normal joycons via bluetooth... either for additional players or to override the standard controls, which would allow tabletop mode.

Like Sony had to call its handhelds "PlayNoStation Portable" or "PlayNoStation Vita", because they weren't stationary but mobile? Or like Nintendo had to call its first handheld "GameNoBoy" because it wasn't a male child?

It is just a name/brand.

I do expect a smaller handheld Switch later on... which can be Switched into a Smartphone. Imagine the sales a Switch phone could get with just their eShop games and a couple of productivity apps.

I think this is almost certainly coming at some point.  It makes a lot of sense.  

I don't think there is any chance of a non-portable Switch coming anytime soon.  As others have said, that would be going against the whole idea behind Switch.  There's no way they'd do that at this point in the life cycle of a successful system.  

It won't sell unless it's an Android device, and then it would be competing with tons of other devices.  I don't see this happening.
