MS has never sold digital game codes in stores. They sell XBL credit on cards that advertise specific games. So, this change by Sony could just put them in line with the MS policy.

Actually, they do sell them:

Nope.  At least, not in the USA.  Those are just cards for XBL credit that show a game advertisement on them.  I've purchased and received several of them over the years as gifts.  You do not have to get the game shown on the card with the credit.

Proof that digital is coming. I've always maintained physical I've always had a collection at home etc.

But almost every game now has multiple major patches so it's not worth anymore to hold onto disks imo. The snag is il never buy a full price digital game lol

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Did you read the thread title  "

Sony will no longer allow retailers to sell  " digital codes "

No one say they will stop allowing retail store  selling physical disc. Also there are others thing they can sell merchandise, special edition, toys, peripheral etc.

Yes, I read it. But apparently you didn't read my post because you thought the portion you cut off wasn't relevant. Here's what you deleted:

Last year we had a thread about the Austrian retailer Gameware who stopped selling Xbox consoles after the announcement of Gamepass. They have no interest in selling a box that might not net them any money from software sales. They continue to sell Xbox games, but they leave it to other retailers to work with the very slim margins on console sales.

Xxain made the argument that retailers won't stop selling consoles when console manufacturers make efforts to remove retailers from game sales, but there's already an example of a retailer who stopped selling Xbox consoles because of that. Retailers make fewer $ on the sale of a console than they make on the sale of a physical game despite the MSRP of a console being significantly higher than the MSRP of a game. When retailers look at a situation where they'd have to allocate a lot of shelf space to a product that doesn't net them a good return (such as a customer purchasing a console and going digital-only with software purchases), then they have to ask themselves if it's even worth it to sell consoles.

Are they selling refurbished xbox consoles or has that stopped as well, this far into the cycle it might not be a worry for them, but what happens when the next cycle starts and customers come looking for their PS5 and XB2 consoles , do they turn around and tell them go somewhere else if that's the case I can see a lot of gamers going else where to get their new console and games and not bothering to return.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Still denying it after several examples?

How about amazon.com? (US Shop)

There are cards like you describe, that might show Minecraft or Forza on the front but they’re just gift cards. There are also XBL Gold cards that have games on the front.

But they also sell cards for tons of games that when you enter the code, you redeem the actual game, not gift card money. I’ve bought more than a few and I live in the US.

Im gonna go to Best Buy or Gamestop in the next day or two to take another look.  But, I researced this last year when trying to buy a card for some game (can't remember which).  My finding was that all XB cards are just XBL credit.  It was also confirmed to me by a Best Buy employee.  So, unless it has changed in the last several months, I'm nearly certain of this.

It’s never worked that way. They’ve always sold digital cards that redeemed for specific games. You were literally just showed an Amazon page full of digital games. Just because a Best Buy associate says something doesn’t mean it’s fact. A GameStop employee once told me Nintendo was going to buy Playstation. Sometimes retail employees say stupid things.

I already said that there tons of cards that appear to be for specific games.  But, they're actually just XBL credit.  While this thread has made me second guess whether *all* cards that appear game specific are just XBL credit, I am 100% certain that some are.  I've owned two that I used to get games other than those shown on the card just in the last several months.

Yeah, some XB gift cards and even some Gold 12 month cards have games on them. But these are super rare compared to the amount of actual game cards, which only give you those games when redeemed. They don’t give you $60 to redeem towards RDR2, they literally give you RDR2.

A couple of Madden games, Shadow of War, Division 1, Forza 6, among others, I’ve redeemed plenty on Xbone, they don’t give you credit. Hell, MS doesn’t do physical game bundles, they’re digital codes. The codes are for the games included in the bundle. If you were correct, they’d just be including gift cards that would actually allow you to buy whatever you want.

Sony works the same way on PS4. There are generic gift cards, there are gift cards with games on the front, and cards that redeem specific games or DLC. Now they’ll stop with the specific codes. For many this won’t make a difference, for many it gives them one less avenue for buying games and potentially saving money.
