I get the impression if you want to make a game fun in an "old school way" it has to be in 8 - 16 bit graphics. Otherwise it will get attacked for not pushing the genre forward.

I had fun with this game last night, played a few hours. Its jumping in the front of game I'm playing at the moment.

Come on, you can't get more old school than Tetris, and Tetris effect sits at 89.
Doom 2016 sits at 85-87.
Nex Machina 88.
Cuphead 88.

Old school doesn't have to be 8-16 bit and still gets reviewed well when done right.

Right is certainly subjective.

Doom 2016 is not really old school, frankly I'd say Crackdown 3 is mindless fun in a similar way. Great comparison actually.

Lol this thread

1. I have said multiple times that MS’s output this gen was bad, not sure why people seem to think the opposite

2. I’m saying MS’s first party has went through a lot of changes in the last year so idk how it’s worrying for next gen when we haven’t even seen what they can do.

There’s a lot of concern trolling here, almost no one expected this to turn out good but please continue. Imagine being so invested in a console you don’t like, can’t relate. Lol

FFS only seen mod edit after I posted

I kind of wonder if the fact that this game was developed by different divisions or studios for different parts of the game fucked it up. We know that may have been the reason Metroid Prime 4's development was rocky, and that resulted in that version being cancelled and development re-starting from the ground up. Plus I believe Gears Judgment had it's campaign developed by Epic Games, but it's multiplayer developed by People Can Fly, and that game was received as rocky.

For what it's worth, this game is actually very beautiful in singleplayer. I might be mistaken but it seems to me like the campaign is a lot more detailed than multiplayer. So I don't really think the whole "it's such an ugly looking game" really applies to that portion of the game.

Also, the Digital Foundry video was nice.

Sigh... but the game isn't fucked up. Sumo was the primary developer of the campaign, I think other studios handled the engine (such as cloud tech), assets, MP, etc.

From my understanding Gears Judgement was developed by People Can Fly, period. Epic was apparently working on Gears 4 before selling it to MS.

People Can Fly did the campaign for Judgment and Epic fucked up the multiplayer.

Two is fine for the most part, for example Gears 4 was made by Coalition (Singleplayer) and Splash Damage (Multiplayer). Crackdown 3 though was made by Cloudgine, Reagent, Ruffian, Sumo. God knows who else, TMCC was also made by about 5 studios too, Lol. So it's definitely likely that there was too many hands on it.

Funnily enough there was rumours that it was the singleplayer having trouble near the end of development and the multiplayer was done, I forgot who from but some verified insider on Era mentioned it. I have no interest in the multiplayer and never really have, It was just to show off cloud really, I would have preferred if they abandoned the multiplayer altogether and focused fully on singleplayer but that's just me.

Huh ... that's weird. I assumed that because Black Tusk became THE Gears of War studio that they made every part of the game. I guess Gears 4 is a good example of a game that was handled well recently with two studios.

But you're right and that would make sense. I think MP4 was rumored to have more than just two studios working on it, with each part of the game getting it's own studio, and I think they were in different parts of the world even. That's just a rumor though, but regardless, knowing how complex game development is it doesn't seem like a stretch to conclude there's been a little bit too much cooks in the kitchen.

Hopefully they don't hang up the franchise just because of 3 and 2

To this day I'm still confused about which did which ... lol ... seems like people say different things. My bad if I was wrong.

mean I understand why games like Recore or Lucky's Tale didn't review well. Although, when a game Lucky's Tale reviews better than Crackdown 3, well I begin to feel reviews just don't matter for this game.

I think expectations has alot to do with that. Crackdown has been hyped up quite a bit, it was in development for close to 5 years (announced in June 2014), appeared at 3 E3 events and was used to demonstrate the cloud.

On top of that when a game gets delayed multiple times its assumed it's because the standards are incredibly high and they arent willing to release anything that isnt amazing.

The combination of these things can make a good game seem mediocre just because you were expecting it to be great. I havent played this game to i could be wrong but I think that could very well be a factor in the lower than expected scores.

Actually People Can Fly were also co-developing Gears of War 2 & 3 with Epic too. I didn't know that.

This game would likely have been cancelled, if it weren't for the fact that MS has had too many high profile cancellations in recent years. They just had to let it run its course.

None of those games, save for Tetris, are "old school" in any sense I can think of.
