Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How does FF9 hold up today?

Am now 4 hours in and still enjoying it. Gameplay in battle is definitely not as matched to my tastes as any Dragon Quest, but it's a fun RPG with a good story and likable characters (Vivi is cool).

Will definitely check VII out when it comes, hopefully they bring the first 6 too, I'm not big on ARPGs, so I'll be skipping XII. Is X/X-2 a turn-based RPG or an ARPG? I'll check it out if it's the former.

FFX and X-2 are turned-based. FFX has a very nice feature where you can swap your party members in and out in a battle which means you can level everyone evenly pretty easily. X-2 has a silly exterior but it's a very solid game underneath, the dress spheres are basically a job system.

Also FFXII is still turned based, your characters will wait a set amount of time before attacking but the gambit system automates a lot of it which made it less interesting to me.

If you are talking switch, I believe they will make most FF available there.

The problem with the story isn't that it was told before, throughout the whole game you are presented with a big mystery by the end of the 3rd disc the game opens up and I found the big reveal to be dissapointing even kind of silly also the last boss is probably the worst in the series closely followed by the heart-thing from ffx. Don't get me wrong the game has many great things like the characters the ost the world the chocobo mini game, but I just don't see it as the best of the series, sure every ff has it's problems for example the ending in ff7 sucked but overall I found ff7 much better than ff9

Each FF fan have a different one they think it is the best and I think it have to do with which was the first they tried.

I don't think it's really the case. I started playing Final Fantasy with the very first game on NES but my favorite is VII.

Same here, its hard to explain but that game had the perfect mix of what i wanted from an rpg and also the lore and the look of the world was relatable.

I'll have to look into the PS4 version as I don't have a Vita. I'm almost finished with my third run through RE2 (which convinced me to go back and beat RE7 as well as the RE1 remake), so now I'm going to need something new to play. Hearing about FF9 makes me wanna go back and finally finish the thing.

I'm also in the market for a good survival horror game but I don't know that there's many I haven't played at this point.

PSP and PS3 have the original game available if you have they (I would prefer the remaster though).

If you didn't play Alien Isolation and Evil Within are quite good. They have the fell of survival.. you don't have much ammo, you shouldn't fight much, you have to escape and survive. And in Alien you have that Nemesis fell, but on an enemy you can't kill and can kill you with a single hit, you really need to stay focused and hidden.

I haven't played Alien Isolation, but I think I finished Evil Within (if it's the game I'm thinking of). It reminded me a lot of RE4 but I didn't quite like the supernatural feel that it had. I just got a new 4K HDR TV and I might replay through the Last of Us, but I did pick up Spiderman.

Alien is totally justifiable and enjoyable for people that like survivor horror, Evil Within is more like RE1 and 7 than 4. It is more survivor than action. And it is more like alucination/paranoia than supernatural (at least how I interpret the game).

wasn't FFIX supposed to be the FF that "went back to its roots" type of Final Fantasy. I always got the impression that IX was more like IV and V then VI-VIII

I remember it being marketed that way yes.

It is a long story but basically, Sqaure was happy with the sales of FFVII in fact so happy that going 'the realistic way' and less medieval was better for the series but some fans and some of the staff loved the medieval style and they wanted another one so Square greenlighted a side project called Final Fantasy Gaiden (litterally means side story).

I remember reading in magazines that their will be no mainline final fantasy after FFVIII on PSONE and that FFIX/FFX/FFXI would be for the next console.

If Gaiden was succesfull enough we would get a Gaiden 2-3-4-5 etc all in the similar Medieval style.

Till this part is basically a fact the next part is guesswork/rumours during that time.  The rumours were that 'Business' changed things.

=>  Gaiden would become FFIX because adding a IX would mean more sales,   FFIX/FFX/FFXI changed to FFX/FFXI/FFXII.  Gaiden 2-3 were cancelled before start of production and replaced by more lucrative products FF crystal Chronicles and game X with Disney that became Kingdom Hearts.  Some of the staff were not so happy Sakaguchi included and they wanted to still make 'Gaiden games' And they were looking for like minded people found some who worked on Legends of Dragoon/shadow hearts etc and Lost Odyssey was probably one of those early visions of a sequel to a FF 'Gaiden' game.
