Forums - PC Discussion - Need help with a new laptop

So the old one I am on is currently dying a slow death. 7 years has been a good run, time to upgrade.

Now I am not sure were to go form here as i7 back in the day mean it was better than an i5, but now reading it all depends on cores threads etc and i7 may not be better than an i5 that is designed differently.

I was also reading some laptop have mobile gpus and some have desktop spec gpus

The other issue is, Australia gets slightly different models to USA, so here are my options

https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/notebooks/gaming-notebooks

ASUS in the past have always had poor wifi, so i need something that has a good wifi chipset.

Other needs:

- Good for live stream and video editing

- Playback of x265

- ideally would like for it to last say 5 years

- Would love to game on it but don't want it becoming irrelevant in a couple years. Would like it to at least last 3-4  years gaming wise

I was looking at the MSI models, as an example and there is so many model numbers now it makes it hard to know what's what lol

is there any new tech on the horizon that will be a game changer meaning I should hold off getting one for the next 6 to 12months?

I'd advice against HP though.

From what I remember, they melt after about a year.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I have a Toshiba and the gpu gets so hot after 10-15 minutes it throttles down to a crawl with sound cutting out, useless.
My wife has a Dell, it sucks, frequently complaining it doesn't trust the (supplied by Dell) power adapter and throttling the CPU down to a crawl as 'protection'
My kids have Asus laptops, they seem ok so far, no wifi problems as they suck up my bandwidth all the time!

If you want to game on it, get a big bulky one with lots of vents, good airflow is essential.
Video editing, make sure it has SSD and 16GB if ram.

What's your budget? In any case, if you want to play on it for 5 years, then you'll need a t least an GTX 1070, so according to the link about 2600 AU$ minimum.

Avoid the i9, it's not worth it. The chip is overheating so much it's often beaten by an i7 in the same laptop case. Most laptops on the site come with a 8750H, and you're really all set with that one

Also, does it have to be a laptop? If you want longevity and gaming performance you're better off buying a desktop PC instead, will get you much cheaper and it can be upgraded along the way instead of having to buy an all new one again.

I just got the Huawei Mattebook D! Love it! Didnt break the bank either.

Yes i need a laptop for portability because of work.

Desktop is another beast for another life lol

Budget minimum $2500AUD.

Everything below that looked ok, but I wasn't comfortable with the GFX cards and CPUs in those looked underwhelming.

Most the laptops over $2500 seem to have either a  GTX 1070 or a RTX 2060 or RTX 2080. Here is were I am not sure on.

EDIT: DELETED

Then like I said, a GTX 1070 with an 8750H and 16GB RAM minimum should do the trick.

The RTX 2080 and the i9 don't seem worthwhile to me, way too much of an upprice for what they can do, so GTX 1070 or RTX 2060 would be the best choices.

The GTX comes with 8GiB VRAM while the RTX has only 6GiB, which can make the 1070 more future-proof, but is a little less performant. The 2070 also comes with 8GiB but is significantly more expensive than the 2060, so this might weight into your budget too much. If that's not a problem, then you can go with the 2070.

Any other general advice on laptops?
