With 22 months on the market, Nintendo Switch has shipped 32.27 million units of hardware.

Here is how it compares to other console hardware, when launch aligned.

Keep on mind that all consoles for graph are at least 85m+ sellers.

Yippee Ki-Yay, Motherfucker!!

Launching in march sure helps. Im surprised the wii was way ahead of the ps1 and ps2 but couldnt outsell any of them lifetime. Did the wii hit a brick wall?

Well, sales got more frontloaded in recent years, so the only really surprising is PS4, as this started off pretty well. And looking at the graph we see, that it can be in part attributed to the different launch dates. PS4 will have it's holiday peak later. Still, if momentum of Switch is good going into the new year, there might be a chance Switch stays ahead.

Other than that we could expect based on earlier Nintendo consoles, that Switch might stop selling earlier than the competition. Although, for Wii it really was the fault of Nintendo who stopped supporting the Wii. So maybe this time it is different. But Nintendo is Nintendo, they could easily do it again.

Yeah, pretty much. Nintendo stopped really supporting the Wii with much Software and so for a time before the WiiU launched, the Wii sales started to drop pretty hard. I'm pretty sure people would've bought more games if more games would've been coming, as proofed by Just Dance which although it was in the late years the only Software for Wii still only slowly decreased in sales.

Damn,Switch killing it. Nintendo needs to keep up the momentum

The main thing that stands out to me is that first year for the PS1. Hard to believe it started so poorly and still went on to sell over 100 million.

PS1 launched in Japan 10months before it did in other regions, PS2 launched in Japan 7-8months before it did in other regions - that's why both of these consoles start out pretty flat in this graph.

The Switch would need to ship ~6m next quarter to stay ahead of PS4..

During that time it was a great time to be a Vgchartz member. But to just sum it up, Nintendo made the mistake to rely on other game devs like they tend to do a lot. An exclusive DQ game coming to the West!! Oh it is a on rail game....An exclusive Soul Calibur game!! Oh it is a horrible adventure game.... Basically it ended up with quarters with almost none third party games and the ones it had were horrible.  This quarter is basically how it felt with the Wii,  horrible third party exclusive  'Travis strikes again'  horrible managment of a game 'Metroid Prime 4' and people complaining when they announce finally the next games....

Atleast the next quarters could be great and let's just hope invest and work with third party devs :).
