Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Was the SNES era the peak of Nintendo software development?

I can agree that objectively, as much as that is possible, the SNES is probably the best video game system ever made (I guess PS2 would be the other contender for that title). However N64 remains my favorite.

Objectively the best console of all time is the one you have the most fun playing.

Those were the days when they could churn out a new masterpiece of a zelda or mario game in under a year.

Games just require too much production time these days to really compete with the output of the 80's and 90's imo (even with N64 Majora's Mask only took 6 months), but they've been off to one heck of a strong start with the Switch already.

That’s not actually true. At only 9 games, Nintendo had fewer first party titles than any other console. They more than doubled total first releases for the N64 with 19 total. Even the Switch has already surpassed the SNES by 50% at 14 games - even more if you include ports from Wii U. Nintendo published 18 games total on SNES, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe marks Nintendo’s 32nd published game on the platform.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I'll just add a few more SNES gems...Secret Of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Actraiser

Let's face it the SNES has the best original software and more PLAYABILITY than any console ever

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Gameboy didn't really take off until the N64 had already came out. So in a way SNES was the last time Nintendo really truly focused on a single system at once.

Do you realize that the gameboy came out in 1989?

I feel sorry for anyone that thinks the best games were made in the past and best consoles were on the past (although I feel like it about musics and even movies/anime). If I didn't think we are ever making better games I wouldn't be playing newer games everyday.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Ithink its either the wii or switch

Potentially.

I think all three are past their peak.

Nintendo - SNES
Sony - PS2
Microsoft - OG Xbox

Doesn’t mean all three don’t still or can’t still make good games of course.

That's why I said "take off". Poke'mon Red/Blue was the game that made Gameboy sell like hotcakes. And that didn't come out until 1996 or 1997.

To me, yes, it was. My SNES list would be far longer than a N64 or Wii one.
