Forums - Gaming Discussion - GameStop decides to stop trying to sell the company

Yeah, would a bank let you finance a vehicle that wont start and doesnt have wheels?  Brick and mortar VG shops are a thing of the past, and its sad.

Digital is the future. I have fond memories of GameStop, but they will be gone in 10-20 years as the physical markets shrinks.

Hopefully it stays open long enough to trade in my Playstation 4 pro for the 5 for the typical around $200 they usually do when a new console rolls out.

Maybe if they offered disk protection along with the sale of the company? I mean it is pre owned, who knows if it will run or not.

They tack that on anyway if you do not pay attention and decline it, so they really would not have to add anything if they made it seem like they were doing them a favor.

Hopefully as older online stores close, more people will see how even if the company is alive and healthy, you will lose your digital purchases eventually and lean back to physical media.

Seriously, fk digital...

The Gamestops here are run poorly. The amount of waste on labor cost is astronomical. I often see stores with 3-5 employees and only a few customers. Therefore, they likely do not make enough in sales to pay for their employees' wages. Then I see another store with 1 or 2 employees frantically running around trying to serve the customers. I can only imagine the waste on shipping, utilities, and marketing.

That being said, I do not often shop at GS. I can get the same products for cheaper online and not experience the poor customer service at Gamestop.

Gamestop would be smart to partner with Nintendo of America as much as possible. Obviously all of the big 3 have an online store, but Nintendo is not pushing digital as hard as the other two. Also, there are lots of Nintendo customers out there that they are just not getting, because Amazon tends to do better with Switch than the other consoles. Really if Gamestop would partner more with Nintendo and intentionally make their stores more attractive than Amazon to customers, then they have a decent amount of growth potential there.

If GameStop can shrink their store count substantially, and evolve the business, I see no reason that they ever have to go away completely.  Even ifphysical media production stopped today, there's still 40 years of retro software, and both modern and retro hardware, lifestyle products, and more for them to sell.

The gaming business is huge.  I think there will be room for specialized physical retail indefinitely.  I don't know if GameStop is the right company long term, but they certainly dominate the biz right now.

Sure, if they can survive without selling new physical games, they can survive indefinitely. I'd be curious to see the % of their profits coming from physical new games compared to everything else (merchandise, used games, digital download codes of new games, etc).

I just think the physical market will dwindle to almost non-existent in our lifetime, as digital is far more convenient (less weight to carry, redownload on different devices, games can't be stolen, etc). I say this as someone who, during the GC/Xbox/ps2 and Wii/ps3/360 era was STUBBORNLY opposed to digital games. When the 3ds/Wii U came out I started being open to the idea and now with the Switch after the first year I've bought everything digital basically. I have no intention of ever going back to physical. It is just a far simpler and more convenient way of gaming.

Gamestop has such a bad rep here in the states, and I imagine the same for the rest of the world. And just yesterday I found out that they oversold KH3 pre-orders and had to cancel on some buyers. I would love nothing more than to see Gamestop go the way of Blockbuster.

The Gamestop near me has started automatically adding the warrantee into the sale of a game unless you explicitly ask them to remove it. This is beyond sketchy.

I think it is so ridiculous that right across the street from one of the Gamestops in my city of Oslo, Norway i can get a  new copy of a game cheaper than if i had bought a used copy at Gamestop
