Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch is home console seeing the fastest software sales so far in Nintendo's history, Smash Bros sold 5m in first week

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that Switch is having such gigantic software sales compared to past consoles. With the Wii and DS, for example, software sales were divided between two different platforms, the Switch is the first unified platform.

Man you're reaching, but ok I'll bite.

God of War Chains of Olympus was a PSP game, does that make the PS3 a portable?

Gravity Rush was a portable game that was initially a VITA release, is the PS4 a portable because of Gravity Rush 2?

An IP can start on a handheld, and move to a console  and vice versa.  It means nothing as it is all about the content.  If the next pokemon game is on a completely different level, it was not designed as a handheld game.

Take Zelda for example.  Was Twilight Princess a portable game because Minish Cap existed?  Or was Minish Cap console caliber because of Twilight Princess?  It is all about the content of the game being released, not of previous games in the franchise.

Also, as per my example, just because a handheld game gets ported to a console or has portable and console versions, like Dragon Quest XI being on 3DS in Japan, it does not change what it is being ported to into a handheld.  With that said, your point about The World Ends With You makes zero sense what so ever.

And on the note of Dragon Quest, it and other games that fit this category, always have their Switch ports being scaled from the PS4 version, NOT the respective  3DS or VITA versions of said game.  If the Switch was developed for as a portable rather than a home console, would it not be the other way around?

Except you can't play ps3 on the go. Is ps vita a home console as well by that logic since you can dock it to TV? Even psp?

So you are saying that just because the PS3 plays portable games, it is still a home console?  Good then you see how pointleas it is to say that a 3DS port to Switch is meaningless in the debate as well.

The Vita and PSP can connect to a TV sure, but they are not like the Switch.

The Switch literally changes functionality when undocked, altering its form factor.  This is why there are resolution and frame rate differences between the two modes.  And seeing how there are no portable only games, but docked only games can exist, it leans towards being a home console.

Yeah, Switch will be a true home console if it don't have screen and battery or playing ability on the go

Yeah, Switch will be a true home console if it don't have screen and battery or playing ability on the go

Switch will be a true handheld when all of its games can be played undocked.

What Switch game can't be played undocked but docked only?

Ah, that game. I just remember about this, with this, you won't have to use dock mode to play it

You are reaching bud.  For one, you have to buy an extra 3rd party device.  By that logic the PS4 is portable due to remote play.

But lets just give credit to table top mode here...you are still not using it as a portable.  The device is stationary and cannot be used on the go.  It is no different than bringing your PS4 and X1 with you and plugging it into a small TV.  The only difference is that the Switch makes it easier.

So no, you cannot play Super Mario Party in handheld mode.  However there are no handheld games that cannot be played docked.  This is because the Switch is a home console designed as a hybrid to allow you to take most games with you on the go.

It's been a while since I looked at it, but I'm almost certain that most, if not all, of the games in the Labo variety kit require the Switch to be undocked when playing.

BTW, I generally agree with your point that the Switch is designed as a home console you can take with you.  But the portable aspect is still a major component, and one that Nintendo should continue to promote and expand on the Switch, especially considering they have no competition in dedicated portable gaming consoles right now.

Big different, i'm asking about dock and undock, this is not docked mode. "By that logic the PS4 is portable due to remote play." Except you need to bring a ps4 and hoping for charge socket as well as wifi to play anywhere, not every place in this world have strong wifi.

"But lets just give credit to table top mode here...you are still not using it as a portable.  The device is stationary and cannot be used on the go.  It is no different than bringing your PS4 and X1 with you and plugging it into a small TV" Table top mode isn't TV mode (or docked mode). "The device is stationary and cannot be used on the go" It is very light and easy to bring with you but not ps4/xbox 1. They are already big, now you need a HD TV (even a small one) as well as hoping for two charge sockets, that is a league different compare to the Switch.

"So no, you cannot play Super Mario Party in handheld mode", but with this thing, i still can play it undocked. However there are no handheld games that cannot be played docked. Are you sure?
