Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch is home console seeing the fastest software sales so far in Nintendo's history, Smash Bros sold 5m in first week

1. Your wrong, but I agree lets not revisit a conversation from another thread.

ok

2. Well that is false, because anyone who knows me knows that I have clearly been a Sony Fanboy from the PS2 all the way up until the Switch released and I sing those praises.  It is why the Switch is now my primary console afterall.

There are exceptions, besides I wouldn't call someone a fanboy anyway, had you bought PS4?

3. No, it is still a trade off.  I am choosing to play one current gen console game in Valkeria Chronicles 4 on the go instead of my copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 because I only want to play one game at a time.  Just because they are different games does not make one more current gen than the other.  At the end of the day, I am playing a current gen console multiplat on Switch and therefore I have passed on buying certain games on PS4.  They are directly competing as the Switch has impacted the sales of PS4 games on my part, and many others as well.  This is only one example of many situations mind you.

Well one day you'll understand about replacement products and indirect competition and that not because you have one behavior others also have it. I couldn't care less about portable gaming but still I wouldn't think it doesn't matter to most people.

4. Nintendo never once said that the Switch is anything but a home console or a hybrid.  Never once did they say it was a handheld successor. I have just acknowledge they haven't named Switch the 3DS successor, mostly because they are still getting profits there, but if they don't ever release a named successor to 3DS won't you consider that it's a successor to 3DS? And again as I said, even if Switch was a regular game console I wouldn't consider a direct competitor (as I don't consider Wii not even WiiU - Nintendo may even have tried to directly compete and get hardcore gamers, but since I don't see they getting the same market as PS4 and X1 I wouldn't consider it direct competitor and for the cause for WiiU lack of sales don't have anything to do with PS4 or X1 existing but own mistakes by Nintendo namely lack of flagship games on a consistent basis).

1.  Since launch day...I mean you see my sig, right?

2. Ok thats you, but that does not mean they are not directly competing.

3. If they do not make a dedicated handheld, they dropped out of the dedicated handheld business.  Just because they made a home console with a feature, does not mean it would automatically take its place in the handheld market (though some could treat it that way I suppose).

And the problem with your reference to the Wii is the you have to look at the libraries.  The Wii was mostly comprised of a specific type of game.  The Switch is mostly comprised of core games from both 1st and 3rd parties.  This puts them in the same market as the PS4 and X1.

1 would be part of 2 right? =p

I see your sig, but since not many trophies or exclusive games it could have been on a friends console that you have played some of the gems. I'm glad you are being able to enjoy the exclusives you like on PS4 and Nintendo exclusives plus selected MPs on the go.

2. Ok thats you, but that does not mean they are not directly competing.

Again it goes back to the other thread discussion, so let's not keep it on discussing.

So are you saying they have dropped from dedicated home console since Switch can be take on the go so it isn't dedicated to home?

If we were looking at libraries then Nintendo wouldn't be competing with Sony since N64 I guess. When Switch have almost all the same games as PS4 and X1 that could be taken in consideration (even if their owners aren't the same type of group)

By the way. I "found a Switch" on my backpack... Was doing some organizing and I found 270USD lying around that will very much go to gift my son with a Switch and I will be able to play Pokemon with him S2.

1.  I have most of the PS exclusives, but I usually do not waste time with collectibles or tedious tasks which is why I only have 5 plats.  It takes a lot to get me to plat a game.  For example, I got the plat in GoW because I just loved it so much.  I am a c hair away from the plat in Horizon Zero Dawn, but did not feel like tracking the collectables down.  I fully intended to, until it actually came time to do it lol.

But I am suprised that you said not that many exclusive games.  Click on it and you can see I have all of the big ones and quite a few smaller ones as well dating back to Killzone and Knack.  I think the only big game I have not played yet is Spiderman due to my backlog already being too big.

2. Agreed

3. No as the Switch is a home console that has a feature to play games on the go.  It plays 3rd party multiplat console games and all of Nintendo's home console style games are released on it as well.

However the Switch is in a unique spot as based on future SKUs and wether or not they release a handheld only version that cannot be docked.  This really is a debate that no one can win based on what time period you may be potentially looking at  and the events of that period that have yet to happen.

As of now however, the Switch is a home console as that is how it is treated and developed for overall.  Years down the road based on business decisions that may or may not happen, my stance could change however.

4. They both had core console games and therefore were competing directly, they just had their own offerings of core experiences to choose from.  The Wii however was comprised as mostly casual friendly games and experiences, but also had some core games as well.  I feel the Wii was competing in the same market as the PS3 as well, but the core gamers that bought the system were front loaded and their focus shifted overtime.

Then when they mis marketed the WiiU...well we all know what happened there lol.

Yep, most people don't do trophy hunting =p but also I saw just Persona and HZD among the pictures as exclusives, that is why I though that maybe you had played in friends house (most of the games I played in Wii and X360 where in friends even though I bought the consoles later).

But I am suprised that you said not that many exclusive games.  Click on it and you can see I have all of the big ones and quite a few smaller ones as well dating back to Killzone and Knack.  I think the only big game I have not played yet is Spiderman due to my backlog already being too big.

I didn't click, my fault. So exclusives for PS4 were P5 and HZD with others being possible to be played on PS3 or I not recognizing the logo.

Still that is off-topic and was just my curiousness. Like some people that had like PS from 1 to 3 but didn't get hooked by PS4.

2. Agreed

Down the road for me I see a potential for they having stationary only, HH only and regular hybrid. That certainly would depend on scalability and Nintendo commitment to keep all 3 as good performance and meaningfull choice. We know from data that Nintendo released sometime ago that there are a good number of owners that only play undocked or only docked plus off course a good bunch that play both ways. So there is potential for more sales if the can improve battery and reduce price for HH, improve power and get some more MPs or prettier Nintendo releases on dock only.

4. On Wii I would say most were casuals, but with great games and constant releases they had a healthy 30% (or 30M) "hardcore gamer" or Nintendo enthusiasts - I myself wanted to buy Wii, but since my friend had it I played enough in his house that I didn't need to buy it during gen, just bought later.

Then when they mis marketed the WiiU...well we all know what happened there lol. even good products when not well placed can suffer.

I dont know if Nintendo has ever actually used the term hybrid. They have always described it as a home console that you can take anywhere.

They used the term system, they never really called it console or portable from what I recall but a home gaming system that can seamlessly be taken on the go which can be taken as a fancy way of saying hybrid.

Actually most of time they used term console, or portable console.

1. The six pics are P5 (PS4), CoD BO4 (PS4), Freedom Wars (VITA), Sly Lost in Time (VITA), Dragonball FighterZ (PS4), and Horizon (PS4)

I have not played my PS3 since I bought my PS4, but I do still have it with a backlog.  But if you did not recognize the VITA games and thought I may have played P5 on PS3 (I think it got a western PS3 release?), then I can understand your confusion.

3. The numbers were 50% docked and Undocked, 30% portable only, and 20% docked only.  So while most people use it both ways as advertised, yes I suppose there would still be potential sales for a dedicated SKU one way or the other.

4.  I never had a Wii.  After the N64, the only Nintendo games I played was Zelda games as I am admittedly, a Zelda fanboy.  So the only Wii game I ever played was Skyward Sword, and since it was released so late in the gen and Twilight Princess was on GC, I just waited for the WiiU and played it on that.

I also only played the Zelda remakes on WiiU outside of a few co op games with the wife.  So until the Switch, Nintendo consoles were literally just Zelda machines for me after the N64.  Having said that however, I am enjoying Nintendo's first party games so much that I am revisiting the older games on those consoles to catch up on what I missed out on.

I'm glad we don't have this kind of issue in french since "console" means a support on which you put stuff and can be used both for home consoles and handhelds.

There is no issue, Nintendo looks on Switch like console, it have home consoles prices and home console games.

I know. Well, it's a brand new category, the hybrid one, but is still have to be considered as a home console if people wanna put it somewhere market wise.

"all of Nintendo's home console style games are released on it as well" Well, well, their biggest system seller is a handheld series: Pokemon
