@CGI-Quality Thanks. The cloud can of course always help with specific time of day / weather light maps. All the data can be stored in the cloud while the client retrieves what it needs for the specific scene / time / weather combination. That's probably a cheaper solution than having a server farm dedicated to real time ray tracing.Dynamic light sources won't be easy though. How long before ray tracing can do this real time

Make a couple screen shots when you find those barrels, I wonder what your own comparison looks like.

Nah, I meant what I said - there are some scenes where it looks really, really bad - look at DF's video, just from memory alone there's barrel scene (around 15:00) and then inside of not sure what it is, there's some console and some wheel (around 16:00)...no modern game, even without RT should look like that.

I don't see no baked GI to replace RT, let alone voxel based real-time GI - that's why I said that I need comparison in game (or demo) that actually has proper replacement when RT is disabled.

I own the game and can tell you that it doesn't. RTX certainly looks better (though not in all scenes), but 'really, really bad' for non-RTX scenes (any of them) remains a gross exaggeration.

The vid you're talking about, in that moment, is horribly captured (it is zoomed many times, among other things wrong with the footage, and that is on DF, not Exodus). At no point while I've played has the game ever looked this way:

@SvennoJ: Depending on implementation, the Cloud may be able to help.

That part is zoomed, @13:55 it's not zoomed...when RT is off, to me it really looks quite terrible for 8th gen game. It's even worse @16:03...that scene in particular reminded me of something from 10 years ago - if there was at least properly prebaked GI it wouldn't look so plain like that.

But as I said, it's only in some scenes that I find their effort (or more likely time=money) severely lacking. RT is definitely way forward, it solves so many problems at once, there's no doubt about it, I just don't think Metro Exodus is game that is good for comparing what RT brings, since those very scenes with nVidia's own VXGI would look so much better than what they currently look like with RT off.

I don't know what I'm missing here. This barrel looks fine to me without RT.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

Yeah, that doesn't look half bad, as opposed to DF's screeenshots.
I was thinking the same, as if they turned down everything to lowest (if there's such setting) to make it as bad as possible, so that RT stands out. It's particularry bad in that other example I've mentioned, eveything is so plain with almost no shadows at all.
I could probably throw in some conspiracy theory in just for fun (not that EG and DF are strangers to advertorials), but this is probably just a case of not so great gaming journalism.

I really wish I could play the game, but I'm not one for supporting a company like Epic.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Can I borrow CGI's PC for 3 days? I'll finish Metro in that time, I promise.

Bumped across these

CryEngine implementation of Sparse Voxel Octree real-time illumination.

Apparently, 3-5% of performance hit on medium, and 6-8% on high settings.

Man, sometimes I hate not having a beast PC. I guess Metro will look pretty good on my PS4 Pro but I sure as hell would have loved to play it in High/Ultra on a PC.

@Holodust: Yes! I have seen that. Those are the kinds of textures to expect in a nice chunk of games next gen.

Actually, I've posted it for SVOTI On vs Off comparison - not sure if it shows up for everyone, though it should be, it's animated gif.

I find this solution to look really good, and performance hit is quite low, much lower than RT.

You can currently get a RTX 2080 for $680 on newegg. It's tempting.

These Metro pics looks so good! That water is beautiful.
