Forums - General Discussion - What's the point in having children?

We (as well as pretty much any living being) are “programmed” to sustain our species. It's just natural that people feel the urge to have children and pass on their DNA. It's not egotistical, it's just what living beings do. Why do you think we feel pleasure during sex? Because that incentivizes that practice, increasing the change of pregnancy. Basically the whole point of our existence before civilization was to have kids.

If you have to ask, then you should never have kids, it would be cruel to them

To increase the very surplus population.

Why? It's not like having a child gifts you with exclusive knowledge that can't be comprehended otherwise.

It does, though.

You can't comprehend what it's like to have children if you don't have them. (And I mean wanted children, not unwanted unplanned accidents.) Same with love. You won't know what it exactly is until you feel it. Or a near-death experience. You can read a lot about them, but unless you have one yourself you don't really know what it is.

As to "what's the point", I don't know either. It's in our nature, I guess.

But what I do know is that I love my son more than anything and it makes my day when he just randomly pops into my room to hug me and says "I love you, dad." It's wholesome and just feels great.

Of course you can live without that. No discussion there.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that then.

Surely you thought about it before you had your son, but eitherway I'm glad you make him happy enough to say that!

There are a lot of things that don't really have a point, I mean we are on a video game site, literally something that has even less of a point than having children.

People have kids because they can and it's been natural to continue with your family for a long time, humans don't want to be alone and like having others to care about or share time. In any case, there are many like you that don't like the idea and it's perfectly fine. Personally having children is not a priority in my life at all at the moment either, but that may change.

Well like I said, you don't specifically need to have kids for that, but I guess that's just not enough, people wanna have it all I suppose.

Eh, I don't like that as a reason, but it makes sense. Though if that's your purpose, what do you do once the kids have grown up?

Sure most humans wanna have sex, I'm no different there, but we're not animals, we know how to have the pleasure without the risk (well some of us). Therefore when we have kids, it's deliberately because we want kids (generally), not as a side effect of sex.

It's pretty different the bond you can have with friends or people you met than with your family, especially between parents and their children. Like someone said above, if you can't understand this better never have children

Still be there for them as long as possible I guess.

In fact, we are animals. That's just basic biology.

We know how to have sex without having kids, but we still have that instinct to reproduce and keep the species alive. The whole process of having kids releases a lot of hormones that generate happiness and pleasure. To have kids is instinctive.

By the way, the idea that "when we have kids, it's deliberately because we want kids" ignores a massive portion of the world's population that either doesn't have a choice or doesn't have the resources to prevent pregnancy. You should probably research about other countries and cultures before making such a bold statement about the state of the human species as a whole.
