Some games on have cetrain regions.

Also these are total players not sales

Nice to see but obviously can be very inflated (local multiplayer heavy, free trial, PS Plus, etc.)

Then other factors like games bought but not played or played offline. Or bought for Christmas presents.

They try explaining their totals.

"How the number of players is calculated?

98 games so far. And we finally have first estimate for GTA V.
Actual to date: somewhere between 20 November and 4 December 2018. Thus not accurate for recently released games at all.
Some games (like Fortnite or Secret Ponchos) have separate trophy stats for different regions. In those cases the number of players is calculated for every region."

I was only interested in seeing how much Fallout 76 bombed because of all the bad publicity, angry adopters, and poor reviews. It looks like it is not doing to good when we see these numbers.

"Fallout 76 407,000"

Well it depends on how Playstation handles it. Games bought digitally but not played could still count (there are hints that it does on Xbox). Physically though that's not possible.
Christmas presents.... maybe. Some of the data was compiled even before Black Friday. It's definitely not comparable for new releases at that time.
Playing offline still counts if you go online at any time after that. So only consoles that have never been connected to the internet wouldn't be counted.

so they a tracking trophies?

I think that's part of it but not the whole story because I doubt Fortnite has that many players with a trophy unlocked because you would need the paid version.

Single player games look to do particularly awful. No way Yakuza 6 is less than 200k global.

Yeah that doesn’t make sense, VGC has the game at over 600k sold, meaning it’s likely at around a million with digital added.
