Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch has passed total Vita sales in Japan

While the Vita never found much of an audience in the West, it was actually quite popular in Japan, with over a third of its total sales coming from this single country alone.

As of Media Create's latest numbers, however, the Switch has overtaken Vita's LTD sales in the Land of the Rising Sun, standing at just over 6 million to Vita's 5.96 million.

Just for sake of knowledge, do we know who's next after the PS4 ?

I think PS3

Pretty much, yeah.

If Sony cuts the PS4's price soon they might be able to delay the inevitable for a bit, but it's only a matter of time now.

PS3 - 10.47m
Wii - 12.77m

Nine other systems have sold more than 15m units, so after the Wii there's quite a gap.

GBA - 16.96m
SNES - 17.17m
NES - 19.35m
PS1 - 19.36m
PSP - 20.01m
PS2 - 23.18m
3DS - 24.31m & counting
GB - 32.47m
DS - 33.01m

Barring catastrophe, the Switch should be able to pass the first 5 systems without much trouble.

It may take a while longer, but I think that it will eventually pass the PS2. If it does that, it should be able to catch the 3DS as well since it's not going to do much more than this.

I think the Game Boy/GB Color and DS are out of its reach.

It was bound to happen. The system definitely caters to the Japanese market, and the system is still in its early stage. I figure it'll boost again with Pokemon and Animal Crossing next year.

If I had to take a wild on guess how the Switch will sell in Japan for its life cycle, here's what I would think.

Units in millions:
2017: 3.3
2018: 3.6
2019: 4.5 - (Animal Crossing, Pokemon Gen 8, price cut/hardware revision that brings the Switch price to $250)
2020: 4.2 (Pokemon Gen 4 remakes)
2021: 3.8 ($50 price cut to $199)
2022: 3.9 (Pokemon Gen 9)
2023: 2.4 (Nintendo Switch 2 launch)
2024: 1.3
2025: 0.6
2026: 0.2 (Discontinued)
2027: 0.04 (Final Year on market)

Final Tally: 27.84 million

Seems reasonable if the lifecycle is typical, but I'm not so sure we won't have some surprises along the way, starting next year.
