Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is LABO going to explode this holiday?

No it's not. Nintendo was due for a dud after Switch has done so well. Let it die in peace.

I wouldn't call a product that sold well over 1 million and on track for two by January a dud. Sure it's not a mega hit, but it's a solid start.

Alot of developers would love to have "dud" sales like Labo has had so far.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Sure they would. But they're not Nintendo. They can't get Ariana Grande and The Roots to shill their product on a huge television show viewed by millions upon millions of people.

Oh god, is this going to be another 1-2 Switch and ARMS scenario where every-time its sales climb, the standards for success get arbitrarily changed because you don't like it?

No, it's a direct confrontation of your argument. Nintendo isn't "a lot of developers". They have so much more clout, money, and resources at hand. How many small-time electronic companies do you think would want their product to sell ~15 million units globally? Just because there are other companies that would like to have what the Wii U achieved doesn't mean that for Nintendo, who have higher expectations for their products, it wasn't a failure.

It's a meaningless, substance-less attempt at a deflection that doesn't offer any sort of input into the conversation.

1-2 million in year one is still pretty good no matter how you look at it. Nintendo never really expected this thing to do monster numbers right away, rather they intend for it to sell at a steady pace for a long time. People are only calling it a failure relative to the numbers other Switch games. Same with 1-2 Switch and ARMS, which people also really tried to paint as failures because they didn't do 5 million copies in 4 months or something.

I would see a more detailed breakdown like we have for Japan, because we know that it still hasn't sold through its initial Japanese shipment. While the expectations (and marketing push from Nintendo) shifted with the third Labo kit, it's not matching up with initial expectations.

Nintendo shipped around 200k of the Variety Kit, and around 80k or so of the Robot Kit at launch. Not sure what the shipments for the Vehicle Kit were, but considering it was greatly reduced, I'm betting it's around 50k. I know for sure that the Variety Kit has sold through nearly it's entire first shipment so far, and the Vehicle Kit has sold through the majority of its shipments as well

According to Famitsu Top 30:

26./00. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit (Nintendo) {2018.04.20} (¥6.980) - 2.462 / 212.754 <80-100%>

27./00. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Drive Kit (Nintendo) {2018.09.14} (¥6.980) - 2.453 / 38.003 <60-80%>

Nintendo also hasn't been marketing Labo as much as you think. In fact, they've kept it completely almost entirely isolated from the rest of their Switch marketing efforts so far (it wasn't in any Directs, wasn't at E3, and there hasn't been many ads for it). They also mentioned how they want this to be a product that sells for a long time, so I don't think they're placing all their eggs in the Holiday basket for it.

As for where 1 million came from, all kits combined sold 1.39 million as of July 31st according to Nintendo.

When this type of product after 6 months haven't sold initial small shipment you can pretty damn sure it didn't met expectations. But let defend it anyway.
